However, I don't want to go totally bumperless or put the big clunky bumper back on my 83.
I have recessed the front turn signals into the "pocket panel" like they were on the early cars - looks great.
Now I just need to come up with a bumper alternative... I'm open to suggestions! If I can't come up with anything else, I will simply cut a piece of channel iron (or aluminium if I can find it) and bolt it on to pass inspection, but that idea doesn't thrill me...
I'm open to hearing your ideas, or insights as to how you solved this problem.

I also got one like this coming from a parts car. The difference with Warren's car is that the guy cut them to make them shorter to use the 1974-75 front lenses.
He also made a bracket so the bumper is closer and look more integrated in the front of the nose. I always like the idea.

The catch is you have to make wedges out of aluminum or steel because the tabs on the end of the bumper shocks don't sit flat on the bumper. And for the signals, I made hangers out of metal and pinched them between the bumper and the mount on the shock. As for the ends, I cut them out of the original bumper end. It was the only thing at the time that I could use that looked finished. I am making new ones out of balsawood and fiberglass. The rear is the same way accept that you don't need the wedges.
I also have a few ideas for the 74 dilemma.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hiya Doc. I converted my '79 X to a style similar to Warrens, utilizing the '75-78 bumpers. It is incredibly easy to to. I mounted mine higher than Warren did, to hide the seam over the grille and to allow clearance for the '75 style turnsigs (which have since been converted to the clear/amber Euro lenses).
As Warren states, the end pieces can be fabricated from the stock end pieces. I used '76-78 ends, which was the hardest part of the project (way long process). '75 ends are much simpler and easier to finish as end pieces than what I used at the time. Steven Lawson got inspired by the look to do a similar conversion on his X.

I tossed out the shorter rails when I did my conversion, since they didn't look right. Besides, you need to use the vertical pieces that attach to the bumper to compensate for the angles and to position the single rail where it looks best, and you can only fab one set of endcaps from the '76-78 style endrubber things, so two lonesome rails were unlikely to be of use without the other parts. The shorter front rail could be used if you were going to whack off the ends to fit between '74-75 style turn sigs, but still that leaves the issue of the exposed front seam. On the rear, even the longer rail is barely long enough. I can detail the process, and "possibly" supply the parts...email me if interested.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I'm not sure what you mean by "clunky" or what you are looking for, specifically.
I am familiar with the "ladder style" bumpers and would think you would want to utilize the top rail (longest?) for both front and rear. It looks like Warren used a lower rail for the rear on his.
Let me know the specifics, I'll stop by and get some prices.
He also has a PERFECT set of early turn signals on one car (chrome bezel, flush fender mount) that would go well with this mod.
He usually wants 25 a pair for those...

However, I don't want to go totally bumperless or put the big clunky bumper back on my 83.
I have recessed the front turn signals into the "pocket panel" like they were on the early cars - looks great.
Now I just need to come up with a bumper alternative... I'm open to suggestions! If I can't come up with anything else, I will simply cut a piece of channel iron (or aluminium if I can find it) and bolt it on to pass inspection, but that idea doesn't thrill me...
I'm open to hearing your ideas, or insights as to how you solved this problem.

I also got one like this coming from a parts car. The difference with Warren's car is that the guy cut them to make them shorter to use the 1974-75 front lenses.
He also made a bracket so the bumper is closer and look more integrated in the front of the nose. I always like the idea.

The catch is you have to make wedges out of aluminum or steel because the tabs on the end of the bumper shocks don't sit flat on the bumper. And for the signals, I made hangers out of metal and pinched them between the bumper and the mount on the shock. As for the ends, I cut them out of the original bumper end. It was the only thing at the time that I could use that looked finished. I am making new ones out of balsawood and fiberglass. The rear is the same way accept that you don't need the wedges.
I also have a few ideas for the 74 dilemma.
I have also seen a Datsun 510( early year) rear bumper on a 74 and it looked sharp.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I mounted mine higher than Warren did, to hide the seam over the grille and to allow clearance for the '75 style turnsigs (which have since been converted to the clear/amber Euro lenses).
As Warren states, the end pieces can be fabricated from the stock end pieces. I used '76-78 ends, which was the hardest part of the project (way long process). '75 ends are much simpler and easier to finish as end pieces than what I used at the time. Steven Lawson got inspired by the look to do a similar conversion on his X.

I tossed out the shorter rails when I did my conversion, since they didn't look right. Besides, you need to use the vertical pieces that attach to the bumper to compensate for the angles and to position the single rail where it looks best, and you can only fab one set of endcaps from the '76-78 style endrubber things, so two lonesome rails were unlikely to be of use without the other parts. The shorter front rail could be used if you were going to whack off the ends to fit between '74-75 style turn sigs, but still that leaves the issue of the exposed front seam. I'm not sure what you mean by "clunky" or what you are looking for, specifically.
I am familiar with the "ladder style" bumpers and would think you would want to utilize the top rail (longest?) for both front and rear. It looks like Warren used a lower rail for the rear on his.
Let me know the specifics, I'll stop by and get some prices.
He also has a PERFECT set of early turn signals on one car (chrome bezel, flush fender mount) that would go well with this mod.
He usually wants 25 a pair for those...
