I suspect the synthetic is probably working just fine but it does carry the GL4 rating and that's what concerns me here.

As an alternative, a high quality synthetic motor oil (like Mobil 1) will work fine. I have used it before as well with good results. At my commercial shop, most of the manual transmissions we build (including Borg-Warner 6 speeds) we now use sythetic motor oil in.
