I have a '78 X1/9 that I just can't get to shift into reverse. It feels like it barely catches the edge of the gear (because the car starts to roll), but then it pops out and grinds
I have tried messing with the sandwitch joint and noticed that the shifting rod isn't centered and I tried to compensate for this at the sandwitch joint but it still won't work... I would GREATLY appreciate any suggestions you guys may have.

I am on the 5th of 5 (in different X1/9s) and have found that the 1-2-reverse sliding sleeve and reverse idler usually are chewed up even if reverse hadn't yet failed. Of course, gaskets and seals should be replaced as well, plus inspecting or replacing syncros, etc. while you are there. Good luck.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I assume you are intending to use the X primarily on the street (as opposed to some racing application). I think the KYB struts are about the best 'bang for the buck' as far as street use goes. They do hold up quite nicely for running between the cones - the X really doesn't need a great deal of help in the handling department to begin with but if you were intending to build a car to really compete with the hardcore Solo participants who are pursuing championships, KYBs would prove a little bit too 'rolly' I think in comparison to what could be done (see the "coil-over" post further up the forum page). I assume you are intending to use the X primarily on the street (as opposed to some racing application). I think the KYB struts are about the best 'bang for the buck' as far as street use goes. They are getting harder to find but are still around here and there. If you can't locate any through local parts sources just say the word and we can see what you might find over the web. I'm currently undecided on which struts to get, because I would like to do some mild-to-moderate autoX in the future. I should just go ahead and invest in struts that would hold up to SOME racing. Any suggestions?
On a different note. Is anyone out there looking for a front marker light? I needed one and I talked to the owner of a small repair shop down the road - He gave me both sides for free. So I have an extra!

They do hold up quite nicely for running between the cones - the X really doesn't need a great deal of help in the handling department to begin with
but if you were intending to build a car to really compete with the hardcore Solo participants who are pursuing championships, KYBs would prove a little bit too 'rolly' I think in comparison to what could be done (see the "coil-over" post further up the forum page). So I guess my response to you would be to dig up some KYBs to start with, and see how you like them. For the price, you really can't go wrong.
