[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The fan comes on to stop the fuel in the carb getting so hot it vaporizes, it's a problem on mid engined cars with less air circulating than front engined ones, in fact the fan only comes on about 5 minutes after you stop, and only on very hot days, I have retained my fan but fitted a manual override switch for long traffic jam’s in London where the engine gets so hot That I could see the heat rising in my rear view mirror, I also rewired the wiring so the radiator thermostat also controls the fan, so no, you don’t really need it but it's nice to know you can get some fresh air under the lid if needed, I don’t think this will help or affect your smog problem though. I removed the carb fan more than 10 years ago when I purchased my 1980 carb. X1/9. I never had any problem with fuel lock or other fuel related problem because of the heat.

Since then, I moved to a twin carb set-up, still no problem.

There is a debate about this fan. Some will say, by removing it (and removing some antipoluttion stuff hanging around) you will get more air circulating around the engine and get the same (or better) effect than the fan itself.

Anyway, my feeling is you can live with it or without it. If you got some starting problem when the engine is hot, than an easy cure would be to fit it back.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

As noted previously, the purpose of the fan is to prevent the fuel from vaporizing in the carb after you park the car. What happens is, since the carb sit right above the exhaust manifold, after you park the car, the heat from the exhaust rises up to the carb and gets trapped under the stock air cleaner canister. Since the car is parked, there is little if any air movement. If you park it hot and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then start it back up, when you try to drive away, the engine will stall because the float bowl is empty.

If you switch to a smaller air cleaner, like a K&N then removing the fan doesn't cause as much of a problem. If you want to retain the stock air cleaner canister, keep the fan.

I removed mine in 1984 on my '79 Carbed 1500. It tended to drain my battery here in HOT, sunny California.

In 17 years... I have NEVER had a vaporlock or evaporative problem.

I also have just THIS year removed all the junk plastic splash panels below... so when I look down, I see the ground... and just a week ago I removed the inner baffle to the hood! Parts of my engine show through nicely and the heat escapes as if there were no cover at all!

I am curious, because as you know my car parts are all over the garage (head & other repairs in process) and when I removed the engine lid to get more room to work, I was very surprissed on how heavy the engine lid was!!

I have an engine lid on my parts car, so I could remove the baffle to give it a try.

Have you noticed any flex or vibration on the hood at freeway speeds?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I also removed the inner part of the engine lid (they called it the rain tray under the SCCA rules), but it wasn't with the idea of removing weight. In fact, the inner baffle is really light. The idea was to allow more air to circulate around the twin carbs.

The only modification required is to fit some angle bracket over the rubber height adjusters so the engine lid will drop on something and got some restriction for the correct operation of the lock.

I always keep an aluminium foil in the trunk and put it thru the holes so there won't be rain in the engine bay when the car is at rest (it's really not a problem while driving).

I had problem once in a big storm, the plug wires got too wet and the car was misfiring sometime. I recommend having at least something to cover this corner when it's raining.

I haven't noticed any flex related problem. But it may be noisier.
