Car starts and runs normally when cold. After being driven for a while it looses power below about 3500 rpm and stalls. When stopping for a light it will rev down stall and then start and run normally. Doesn't have power on accel. until about 3500 when secondaries cut in.

Take the top off the air cleaner, and remove the four jets ONE AT A TIME!! and you will probably find something in the bottom of one of them. When you replace the jet, screw it snugly in place. Good luck,

Symptoms are correct since if I choke it by restricting airflow when it is acting up it improves it. To me this means its running rich which I don't think is possible with a plugged jet. A choke blocks air flow and richens the mixture. So it must be starving for gas when it's acting up. Things to check/clean: jets, emulsion tubes, needle valve/float level, float bowl, fuel filter, pump. A problem with any one of these could cause this problem.
If it's possible, pull the primary idle jet when it's running so the blockage can't fall out of the jet when you shut the motor off. Sometimes it can take several tries to find the grain of sand or what have you blocking it. This goes for the main as well, but I don't know if you should try to remove it while it's running. There was another guy who had a blocked idle jet but didn't see it because it was a clear piece of sand. Good luck!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

i had similar problems a while back.
i was given the same advice, and more,
and followed it:
1. clean the jets
2. clean the whole carb
3. adjust the float
4. change the fuel filter (to a good one)
5. switch to an electric pump
6. check the check valve (back-flow)
each of these things seemed to help
but i still had a power cut-out problem.
i then got this story from my FLU friends:
there is a fine mesh "sock" over the pick-up
in the fuel tank. over the years, crud builds up in the gas tank. as you drive, especially with
low tank, this crud begins to collect on the sock
and blocks gas flow.
once you stop the engine, the crud falls away
due to the release of the pump suction.
you can then drive a little more until it builds up again.
i still have this problem occasionally.
but plan to clean out the tank someday...
a clever way of doing this without pulling the tank is to remove the pick-up/sender, remove the sock, install a sacrificial
filter or two upstream of the fuel pump
and pump the stuff out over a long drive.
if you have an electric pump, you can pump out into a gas can.
i haven't done this, but i'm told it works.
as soon as i get my '87 on the road, i can

To this day I still do not know how it could have fit through the tiny entry hole, but there it was inside the jet) - AND after having just witnessed Holly going through all this same mess with her '74, I am pretty sure it really could still be crud in the jets.
I have practically killed myself trying to figure these symptoms out in the past. Years ago, my '75 used to do this, and I tried everything! Replaced the filter, replaced old lines, tore the entire carb down and rebuilt it (!!), cleaned everything (even the jets!) and it just kept happening.
Until I finally took the jets out one at a time & thoroughly blasted through them in every possible direction with compressed air, then took a sewing needle and gently put it through every hole in each jet, then blasted them again. I haven't had any trouble like that with it since.
Whenever the carb starts to act funny like this, go straight for the jets. Not guaranteeing this is the problem, but I have learned over time that one truly cannot check them for debris often enough -Mac.

I took the carb. apart cleaned everything with air and carb cleaner. I didn't find any dirt in the jets but maybe I blew it out. I also installed two fuel filters in the fuel line to catch dirt.
Put it back together and it runs like before but seems to surge. Idle goes 750 to 1500 and it sometimes dies when I stop at a light. I'm going to change points and dist. so I'll see if this solves the problem. I'm using a high energy coil so should be lots of spark.
Also if the car hasn't been driven for a couple of days it has to be cranked a lot until it kicks. I think the fuel drains out of the carb. Since it doesn't do it if driven regularly. Is this normal?

Car starts and runs normally when cold. After being driven for a while it looses power below about 3500 rpm and stalls. When stopping for a light it will rev down stall and then start and run normally. Doesn't have power on accel. until about 3500 when secondaries cut in.

Take the top off the air cleaner, and remove the four jets ONE AT A TIME!! and you will probably find something in the bottom of one of them. When you replace the jet, screw it snugly in place. Good luck,

A choke blocks air flow and richens the mixture. So it must be starving for gas when it's acting up. Things to check/clean: jets, emulsion tubes, needle valve/float level, float bowl, fuel filter, pump. A problem with any one of these could cause this problem.
If it's possible, pull the primary idle jet when it's running so the blockage can't fall out of the jet when you shut the motor off. Sometimes it can take several tries to find the grain of sand or what have you blocking it. This goes for the main as well, but I don't know if you should try to remove it while it's running. There was another guy who had a blocked idle jet but didn't see it because it was a clear piece of sand. Good luck!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

i had similar problems a while back.
i was given the same advice, and more,
and followed it:
1. clean the jets
2. clean the whole carb
3. adjust the float
4. change the fuel filter (to a good one)
5. switch to an electric pump

each of these things seemed to help
but i still had a power cut-out problem.
i then got this story from my FLU friends:
there is a fine mesh "sock" over the pick-up
in the fuel tank. over the years, crud builds up in the gas tank. as you drive, especially with
low tank, this crud begins to collect on the sock
and blocks gas flow.
once you stop the engine, the crud falls away
due to the release of the pump suction.
you can then drive a little more until it builds up again.
i still have this problem occasionally.
but plan to clean out the tank someday...
a clever way of doing this without pulling the tank is to remove the pick-up/sender, remove the sock, install a sacrificial
filter or two upstream of the fuel pump
and pump the stuff out over a long drive.
if you have an electric pump, you can pump out into a gas can.
i haven't done this, but i'm told it works.

To this day I still do not know how it could have fit through the tiny entry hole, but there it was inside the jet) - AND after having just witnessed Holly going through all this same mess with her '74, I am pretty sure it really could still be crud in the jets.
I have practically killed myself trying to figure these symptoms out in the past. Years ago, my '75 used to do this, and I tried everything! Replaced the filter, replaced old lines, tore the entire carb down and rebuilt it (!!), cleaned everything (even the jets!) and it just kept happening.
Until I finally took the jets out one at a time & thoroughly blasted through them in every possible direction with compressed air, then took a sewing needle and gently put it through every hole in each jet, then blasted them again. I haven't had any trouble like that with it since.
Whenever the carb starts to act funny like this, go straight for the jets. Not guaranteeing this is the problem, but I have learned over time that one truly cannot check them for debris often enough -Mac.

I took the carb. apart cleaned everything with air and carb cleaner. I didn't find any dirt in the jets but maybe I blew it out. I also installed two fuel filters in the fuel line to catch dirt.
Put it back together and it runs like before but seems to surge. Idle goes 750 to 1500 and it sometimes dies when I stop at a light. I'm going to change points and dist. so I'll see if this solves the problem. I'm using a high energy coil so should be lots of spark.
Also if the car hasn't been driven for a couple of days it has to be cranked a lot until it kicks. I think the fuel drains out of the carb. Since it doesn't do it if driven regularly. Is this normal?

Screw it in until it starts to stumble, then back out until it no longer speeds up. This is your "lean best idle" and you can fine tune from there.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
