I suspect either a problem with the needle valve or float adjustment because fuel is pouring into the primary carb. barrel. The car will start but it soon dies. A steady stream of fuel is pouring out of the pipe that extends into the throat. Pushing down the throttle doesn't do much until the secondaries open and then it revs fine.
I picked up a carb rebuild kit and I will work on the car tonight after work.
I would appreciate your thoughts re: the problem. Since my manual is 60 miles away I was wondering if anyone can tell me the procedure and measurements for setting the float level. I hope its in the instructions with the kit but I don't have the kit here to check.

He doesn't have internet access so I'll have to try trial and error until I get the level correct. The kit comes with the necessary measurements.
The normal spec is:
hold the carb lid vertical and let the float rest against the needle valve, but not with it's full weight to compress the spring.
The distance between the float and and the leid (with gasket) should be 6mm.

there is also a spec for how far it falls away from the lid, but I can't remember the number. 15mm?
I really don't know and it is not as important.

When I took it apart I noticed a few black specks of dirt (its crunchy) or carbon in the carb. Cleaned everything out and drove it home. Partway there I lost power and it would only keep running on the secondary at full throttle. Pulled carb again and it looks clean and I drove it to work again no problem this morning.
The symptoms seem to indicate a plugged main jet in the primary carb. This could be caused by the dirt the first time but since I didn't find any dirt the second time (blew out all the passages with air and carb cleaner) I'm not sure what the power loss is caused by.
Anybody have any ideas?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Coolest 34hp car ever :)

She had similar problems and I got pretty good at jumping out of the car, opening the hood, removing the air cleaner, pulling the jet and blowing through it with a bicycle pump that we carried in the car. I think I was 14 at the time :)

Eventually we figured out that the float was being disolved by the gas. What?! Yes, it sounds really stupid.
As the first thing I ever did on a car, I got to change the float and the problem went away.

This is a long shot, so I would make sure you have a good fuel filter, but the next time you have the carb opoen, take a good look at the float.

I wait until the car dies, take off the air cleaner, remove the jet blow carb. cleaner through the jet and the carb. put it back together and go. It then runs just fine until the next time. I have had the carb apart and cleaned it so many times I could work as pit crew no dirt or anything visible now.
I have replaced the fuel filter but didn't touch the float since it seemed fine. It looks like I either have to offer you a job or replace the float. I guess the float is cheaper.
