No need for other part changes, such as hubs, axles, flywheel, etc. Could keep the(more robust??) four-speed transmission. My 1978 has 33k, would like to keep as original as possible. Has anyone used or installed one of these? How about the straight-cut gear sets?

Straight cut gears are only for race applications, because they are stronger than helically cut gears (what your tranny now has- except reverse) and transmit power more efficiently. The gear whine you now hear in reverse would occur all the time if you had all stright cut gears. You are in no danger of stripping your stock gears unless your motor is putting out 3 times what it did stock. Sorry if I sound preachy.

Did you see my post on Mira about the Colotti gear sets? Check www.colotti.com. A 5 speed close ratio gearset for the X is about $7,000. You could buy a couple of X's for that. This is for a 5 speed box, though not the 4sp-5sp conversion that was offered by Faza.

Five speed conversion is available in form of the Colotti kit(simple assembly) for $1100 or the Bacci Romano kit for $1000(requires some machining/relief of the cases for installation, ie. use of hand grinder)

No straight-cut gear sets on hand at present. Currently going elsewhere for $2500-3500. Apparently no plans to offer in the future.

Has anyone done business with FAZA? I bought the Race World and Fiat/Lancia bibles from Al. No problem there. Have heard rumors of dishonest dealing. Some people say they are very well treated. Others advise caution and C.O.D. ordering only. Some people expect overnight service on everything these days, whereas, when it comes to hobby stuff(Fiats are hobby for me, not the family transport) I tend to be very patient. Cosentino seems VERY knowledgable about Fiats. Has anyone had any recent dealings?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]Having built and raced dozens of each type I can say that the 5 spd has a couple of problems that are unique to it. First, the early 5 spds have a weak reverse. It is very common to find reverse out in these. I should point out that I often find reverse out in later 5 spds as well as 4 spds, but the early 5 spds are known to have more problems. Second, there were some early 5 spds that had a problem with the synchro hubs on 1st and 2nd gears. This resulted in premature sychronizer failure and improper repair of these transmissions.

The problem with reverse is compounded by abuse. If treated with care, reverse will last the life of the car. As for the 1st and 2nd problem. This was a manufacturing defect. Once corrected, the 5 spd is as robust as a 4 spd.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]No, you cannot use the tripod joints with a 5 spd. And, no the final drives are not interchangeable. The 5 spd case will not accomodate the 4 spd diff or the tripod joints.

There are a few internal parts that are interchangeable, but the diff and final drive are not among them.

and used the output shaft (4.08 ratio)in a late 4 speed case with the 4 speed ring gear (must be 4.08 ratio).. you have to drill and tap a couple of holes in the case to mount the extension housings. This is very easy and it makes a 5 speed with 4 speed type differential. I have done this several times, and haven't had any problems... hope this helps,

Incidentally, the Yugo 5 spds use the 4 spd style tripod inner CV joints. And I did build a 5 spd Yugo box with a 5 spd X1/9 lay shaft and a 4.08 ring gear from a 4 spd X to get a 5 spd Yugo with a 4.08 gear (in place of the 3.76 Yugo ratio).

If I've got this right, you install both 5-speed complete mainshaft and countershaft into the 4-speed case, switch the differential for one with a 4:08 ring gear(like out of a '74) and then do something with the cover to make room for the fifth gear cluster still sticking out past the case. You are correct on the shafts. Both shafts out of a 5 spd along with all of the gears and forks. Then drill and tap the holes on the end of the case for the larger bolts that hold the 5 spd case extention on. I would think that you would have to use the 5 spd selector rod for 5th and reverse too.

Assuming this is going in a 4 spd chassis, you will want to give the inner wheel arch support a gentile whack with a sledge hammer to clear the case extention.

Because the final drive pinion is machined onto the lay shaft you are stuck with the 5 spds final drive ratio. That is the pinion gear from the 5 spd and the ring gear from a 4.08 4 spd.

There are aftermarket ring and pinion sets out there. Bayless and FAZA used to sell them.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]I bought a set of Al's Uniball camber plates a few years back. I carefully explained the SCCA rules that I had to deal with and he assured me that the plates he had would work within the rules and that I could certainly return them if I wasn't happy.

He sent them promptly, but he only deals in C.O.D., which was a pain. It cost me extra money and over an hour round trip to U.P.S. to pick them up.

It turns out that they would not work within the SCCA rules. I returned them to Al. I was out the shipping costs both ways, the C.O.D. costs, and the 20% restocking fee he never told me about. I waited a couple of weeks for my money and finally had to call him. That is when he explained that by law he had up to 90 days to refund my money.

Wouldn't you know it took the full 90 days to get my money?

Now for the real kicker...my refund came in the form of money orders from other customers that he had signed over to me. I think I had something like five different money orders that I had to take to the bank. Then I had a hassle at the bank because they didn't like the third party money orders and besides that my buddy Al had misspelled my name on them!

I think I lost in the neighborhood of $75-$80 on that fiasco!

This doesn't include the lengthy long distance phone calls, (more $$), where he goes into great detail bragging about his 30 year old racing history and what he thinks of the SCCA!

I am sure he would object to being treated like that. Imagine putting your whole life into promoting one marque, investing everything you own into parts and inventory, and then having that Company disappear!! Not many people are buying Fiat parts these days. I like Cosentino. He has done more for Fiat than anyone else I can think of. But the other large vendors, like Chris Obert, Vicks, and International seem to have faired okay and their customers seem happy. So maybe it's a matter of personality or business acumen. Your story should be FAIR WARNING to myself and anyone else who choses to deal with Al. Thank you, Mark, for your contribution.
