Converting 4x98 to 4x100 Help Needed

I'd be interested to hear any details of your headlight conversion. Mine still has the stock pop-ups. :(

Forgot the obvious. As Chris mentioned, they are stock Montecarlo headlights and a Series 2 Monte grill. Took me over ten years to find the grill (the black plastic part); not a requirement for the conversion.

Thanks Chris...

I think you know me better than to think I want to spend vast sums of cash... Well, let me amend that. It's not that I don't want to spend vast sums of cash. It's that I don't have vast sums of cash.

Kind of like, "I can have any girl I please. I just don't happen to please any."

Anyhow, when you say you have the tooling for the centerpiece, I assume you mean you have a mold... do you still have it, and what would it cost to get some fiberglass popped out of that mold?

Thanks,
Pete

+1

If you look at threaded hole to edge the wheel flange on the stub axle, there is not a lot of material there to increase the bolt circle to 100mm.

The stub axle is heat treated making alterations not so easy and where it's re-drilled will not be the same strength wise as the original threaded holes. Like many un-seen details on the X1/9 there is proper engineering and production in many of the stock parts and one must understand the original design before trying modifications.

It's likely you're going to "get away with this" but keep in mind. it's far from ideal.

IMO, spend the $$$$$ for proper wheels. And, wheels do have a finite life. The real question is just how long should a wheel be in service?

Is to get a rim with a 4x98 pattern.

You can get pretty much any size in a 13" rim size with any width from 4.5" up to 13".

I would do that instead of redrilling items.

Of course, this is only my .02!

The lack of cash seems to be a problem with Scorpion owners. Almost every one of them complains about the price of stuff for their very rare coachbuilt automobile.

Yes, I still have the mold. My glass guy has really raised his prices lately, back when the Scorpion/Montecarlo forum made such a big deal out of it all his estimate was about $425.00. I would need to ship him the tooling to get a current price.

I think Monte Hospital also has the tooling, and so did Scorpion Reproductions back when I was their North American distributor. I don't know their current prices, but I know I can't compete. The forum folks prooved that...

You think this is a lot, this spring the guy in Italy wanted Euro 750.00 for his reproduction. Yes, his is as original, but that's expensive!

Sorry about the girl trouble.

Ummm, ah, yes that would be outside my price range...

MH still has them on their website, they list for about $170. Not sure what shipping would drive that up to tho. Maybe my pop-ups aren't so bad after all.

Thanks,
Pete

I used bmw wheels

I started with finding the right hub size rims first, then went from there.
Then I had a machine shop that specialised in hub conversions for drag and offroad applications do the work.. They drilled new holes, tapped and installed a the proper grade bolt for lugs. I asked them if it was too close to the edge to do. They said it was no problem due to the small amount the hole is moving out (1mm) and being hub centric there is less chance of that type of failure. Note the backs of the bolts do need cut down to clear, see pic.

Then if you get over ambitious... fender flares will be required.
