I was hoping for some electrical expertise. The damnest thing happened to me while driving home tonight. I was working at a community hospital about 40 miles from my home and had just finished my shift in their emergency department. I was on the home stretch, about a mile from my house, when all the sudden my radio and lights just went out. Scared the *&^%*#@* out of me. I don't know if anything else stopped running or not. My first response was to depress my clutch and start to coast. My engine never stalled, but I did feel like the car might stall when I tried to let out the clutch a couple of times (it's possible that I wasn't giving the car enough gas when trying to re-engage the transmission, thus producing that stalling feeling, but I don't know as everything happened so fast--I was kind of "freaked out"). After about 10 seconds of coasting, my radio and light came back on again. I didn't do anything, they just came back spontaneously. I drove home the last mile without incident and parked the car in the garage. About an hour later, I went down to the garage to make sure the car would start (I need to be able to get to the hospital every morning). It started right up. I have never had a spontaneous loss like this, and prior to this the car and all systems were running like a top (I was actually thinking how much I was enjoying the drive home in my sweetly humming X with some smooth jazz on the radio)

On a potentially related note, I have noticed lately that some mornings when I place the ignition in "run", my headlights will glow even though the lights are not on. When I try to start the car, the engine cranks, but won't turn over after about 5 seconds of cranking. If I then place the ignition in stop and try to restart the engine, it starts right up. I don't know if these things are related, but I would appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Last question: Are the power window switches illuminated by some fiber optic source? I've noticed that the window icon of my passenger side switch is visible at night, but the driver's side switch is not. Recently I had the driver's side switch out to clean off some corosion, and I'm wondering if I disconnected something. That's it for now.

Hope you all are well and anticipating the warmth (and top off motoring weather) of spring.

Mike

PS: Has anyone ever tried to find red leather replacement upholstery for their X1/9 seats? I am debating whether I should try to get a trim shop to repair my existing leather or instead just replace the upholstery all together (I am going for an original look as best I can). How about red carpet replacement sets (or one piece molded). Any suggestions of source besides IAP. Any comments about the quality/originality of either replacement leather or carpet. Thanks again.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

chances are that something ended up shorting out, effectively bypassing the headlight and auxiliary circuits and nearly cut power to the engine as well by the sounds of it.

unfortunately while the problem isn't actually happening it is almost impossible to diagnose the real culprit without physically dismantling the electrical system to find the damaged component.

of course it could just be a lose connection somewhere.....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey Julian, Steve and Tony,

Thanks for chiming in about my electrical gremlins. Sounds like everyone is in agreement that either my ignition switch, headlight switch, fuses or some combination thereof is at fault. The problem has not occured again, thank god. I will take a look at each of the things that folks have suggested as soon as I get a chance (probably not until the weekend). I recently looked at the ignition swich connection (about 2 months ago) when I was having some intermittent starting problems. At that time, the white connector looked fine. But, I'll check again. Question.... where are these systems (ignition, headlights, radio) functionally connected such that a single short would get all three. Also, since I am not sure if I actually lost power, are just the headlights and stereo on the same circuit anywhere downstream of the ignition switch? Seems to me that this would give some localizing information. I am no electrical genious, but given the fact that all these systems receive their power via the run position of the ignition switch, isn't this the most likely culprit (since I assume that beyond the ignition switch these circuits operate in parallel). If so, any thoughts on why it would be working one minute, then not working, then resolve spontaneously without intervention? (I guess my simple mind thinks that if something is broken, it won't get better unless I actually do something to fix it) If it does turn out to be the ignition switch, can I just replace the wires, or does the whole switch need to be replaced? Given the age of the car and its long period of storage, I should probably go around the car and systematically clean any corrosion off connectors. Advice on the best way to do this would be appreciated.

My headlight switch feels smooth to me, and is not difficult to move. The headlights are working fine, although they are a bit dim on low beam. High beams are much brighter and my voltage gauge on the dash actually shows a slight increase when I turn on the high beams relative to the low beams (does this suggest higher resistance in the low beam circuit?----possible corrosion?). I thought I remember hearing that the 1983 X's already used relays for their headlight circuits. Am I remembering this correctly?

Would anyone be concerned about mounting an RF CD changer in the car given these gremlins? I would like to do this with the existing stereo head unit (Clarion 9600T digital tuning unit that shipped with the car). Were the antenna connections in these units the same standard that we use today? Well, that's it for now. Thanks again everyone for your help.

Best wishes,

Mike

Regarding the lights glowing while off, I agree with the diagnoses that the switch may be bad. Is it hard to move, or does it feel "mushy"? The toggle has spring-loaded plastic wipers that move along a brass bar. That bar gets hot (poor contacts/halogens) and melts the plastic wiper. I ended up adding relays into mine, after makeing one good switch out of two bad. Boy, are my headlights brighter!

Yes, the window switches are lit up with fiber. You must have forgot to plug the fiber in behind the graphic.

Also try "wiggling" the key in the ignition switch while its running and see if it causes a stumble.

One other problem I encountered were "loose" fuses... I have '79 with the old European fuses and one time lost half my electrics... I found a bunch of the brass connectors loose and the fuses just barely contacting them. A bump... and something went away... another bump and they came back.

Good luck and let us know what ya find!

I have a local junk yard that has many different Fiat parts... and bunches stored inside a building that I'm generally not "allowed" into. Many times I'll see a part on a car and instead of pulling it, they show me BETTER ones they they bring to me from somewhere in back!!!

These two were still on the car last week and looked VERY GOOD. No rust, no cracks, no pitting, no sand damage.

Let me know... I can go git 'em or take a photo if you wish.

Hello,

I had a few evenings when the engine would
quit wile driving and the headlights would stay on
but the lights would fold down into the hood, this
scared the poop out of me, so i looked in a old fiat
book and it said the ignition switch contacts have
worn, a lot of keys on a key chain can cause this,
so i got a new switch $ 50.00 and it was fixed, this
is a common problem, oh and my car only had 15000
miles at the time and is well kept..

Dave.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
