My '85 leaks oil (drops) from the rear end of the crankshaft. I have replaced the oil retainer
twice. The 2nd time I installed a bit smaller retainer. I know it's bad, but it worked for a
while - about 8 months and 20-30K miles. now it starts leaking again. It is very
embarrassing when I leave oil stains on my friend's porches.

2. If so, have you checked the crankcase breather assembly to be sure it's not restricted?
3. Is there a groove worn in the crankshaft seal area?
4. One last thing.. the seal carrier is centered by the seal(not locating dowels). You might want to pull the oil pan, and replace the seal so that you know that the pan gasket is good, and that the seal is not being pushed out of position by forces of the oil pan.
5. Oh yeah, one last thing really.. the factory seals have "pumping grooves" on the lip. Some aftermarket seals don't have this feature.
IMHO, the oil seals don't seem to be terribly heat and oil resistant!! They seem to get hard and begin to leak after a few years of use.
Is it just occasional drops, or does it leak badly? <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

1 no. it definetly leak only at the rear end of the engine.
2 no, i didn't check the breather. yes i will.
3. no grooves in the crankshapt.
4. i believe we did replace the pan gasket.
5. i don't know obout the pumping grooves. i used a general purpose oil seal as bought in the local auto parts store. i think i just asked for the seal by dimensions. it may have been a mistake.
in a few weeks i will take the engine out. i am intalling an a/c unit. i'll use the occasion to put your advise into practice. any more ideas, from you steve our anyone else, this is the time.
