Climbing up the scale you could get excessive gas pressure in the sump which would cause the breather to spray oil out. At the worst end you get an accumulation of oil in the cylinders. Since oil does NOT compress this sort of stops it working (ie it appears to seize).
The older GM cars that we have in the UK suffer this problem a lot (oil blowing from the breather). In the case of the GM's this is down to a blocked or partially blocked breather pipe (they put an filter in the hose that only last a few years).
