Fiat to buy Bertone, poss 'integration' w/Chrysler [updated]

good catch

Very sad news though about the Bertone house...such a shame. Maybe with Fiat's help a revitalization is a possibility?

Another article on the potential purchase... this one has a neat pic of an X in the snow.

Jim, let's hope. Maybe bertone could start building Chryslers for Fiat :)

Bertone was never the same after the passing of Mr. Nuccio Bertone. He was well noted for discovering talent, then cultivating it at Carrozzeria Bertone. The list of talented individuals who once worked there reads like a list of car industry inovators (Giugiaro, Dallara, Gandini and more) from the Italian car industry.

It was production of the X1/9 that allowed Bertone to survive those lean years back in the early 80's and gave Bertone a product to build and sell for quite a long time. What is not well reconized is how X1/9 production was a significant part of Bertone's economic foundation for a good number of years.

I never believed the X1/9 was a true FIAT, but really a chassis designed (with help from FIAT engineers) and built by Bertone with FIAT mechanicals.

I remember a rumor that Mr. Bertone and Mr. Agnelli got into some kind of argument in the late 80's.. me suspects it was over the X1/9 future or future car production for FIAT and the two companies never seem to have the same relationship after this event.

It is sad to see what was once a great speciality Carrozzeria fall into a state of dis-array in recent years. It also highlights just how importaint talented individuals are to any company or organization.

Bertone "integrated" with Chrysler???

WTF!!!
Intriguingly, Economic Development Minister Claudio Scajola further said that Bertone's manufacturing unit will be "[integrated] with Chrysler for the production in Italy of some models for the American auto company." The mind reels with the possibilities of Italian-designed and built Chryslers flooding American showrooms – for better or for worse.

:pigsfly:

Maybe FIAT should combine Abarth and Bertone into an internal Special Vehicles group.

Take a standard FIAT product, let Abarth do the handling and power and let Bertone make it look great.:2c:

they just might, but..

...then they will slap a Chrysler badge on it, and call it the next PT Cruiser... :hmm:

Fiat has only bought the factory with its 1200 employees. The 2 Bertone design companies are still in the hands of the family Bertone.
AFAIK FIAT is not interested in the brand name "BERTONE"
