They were necessary because the fenders had to be cut front and rear for the tire clearance. Chris Dorsey built the car and ran it for a few years before I bought it. I am currently running Ansen 13 x 5.5's and 185SR70x13s.
I really LOVE the FWD type wheels and think a 15 x 8 inch wheel with MOST 185SR50x15s has an overall circumference to what I am currently using.
What I don't know is... (a lot)... the offset, and maximum TIRE width to keep the outside edge of the tire IN THE stock wheel well "window"... and still not rub under compression and when turned.
I know also, that adapters will need to be made... and that they will probably be the KEY to making something like this work. But what I think I need to know first is what are the KNOWN maximums that have successfully used to date.

Nor will the 185/50-15 tires mount on them. I ran 13x8 wheels on my '74 with 185/60-13 tires. It took a lot of work to get the tires to air up after mounting and the shorter sidewall of a 185/50 I know will not stretch far enough to take air.
Also, the 15x8 will not clear the stock fenders. No matter the tire size, they will rub in front at the front of the wheel well. Also when the suspension is compressed at the top of the arch.
I managed to get the 13x8 inch wheels with a 4.75" back space under the fenders only after rolling the fender lips. One other problem is, that much back space makes a lot of scrub radius and that makes the steering heavy. For a street driven car, I like 13x7s with a 4.5" backspace and 185/60-13 tires. Makes a very nice package.

As I'm sure you are correct about the backspacing and fit... I must diagree with the 185SR50x15 tire on a 15x8 wheel. I've personally seen them mounted... but I did not see the trouble they may have gone thru to do it (inner tubes?) Or if it was indeed the BEST thing to do.
They did look awesome though!

They were necessary because the fenders had to be cut front and rear for the tire clearance. Chris Dorsey built the car and ran it for a few years before I bought it. I am currently running Ansen 13 x 5.5's and 185SR70x13s.
I really LOVE the FWD type wheels and think a 15 x 8 inch wheel with MOST 185SR50x15s has an overall circumference to what I am currently using.
What I don't know is... (a lot)... the offset, and maximum TIRE width to keep the outside edge of the tire IN THE stock wheel well "window"... and still not rub under compression and when turned.
I know also, that adapters will need to be made... and that they will probably be the KEY to making something like this work. But what I think I need to know first is what are the KNOWN maximums that have successfully used to date.

Nor will the 185/50-15 tires mount on them. I ran 13x8 wheels on my '74 with 185/60-13 tires. It took a lot of work to get the tires to air up after mounting and the shorter sidewall of a 185/50 I know will not stretch far enough to take air.
Also, the 15x8 will not clear the stock fenders. No matter the tire size, they will rub in front at the front of the wheel well. Also when the suspension is compressed at the top of the arch.
I managed to get the 13x8 inch wheels with a 4.75" back space under the fenders only after rolling the fender lips. One other problem is, that much back space makes a lot of scrub radius and that makes the steering heavy. For a street driven car, I like 13x7s with a 4.5" backspace and 185/60-13 tires. Makes a very nice package.

As I'm sure you are correct about the backspacing and fit... I must diagree with the 185SR50x15 tire on a 15x8 wheel. I've personally seen them mounted... but I did not see the trouble they may have gone thru to do it (inner tubes?) Or if it was indeed the BEST thing to do.
They did look awesome though!
