(both replacing worn parts and non-stock mods) I'm assuming that a new lolipop is first on the list. Is the rubber needed? If the lolipop were replaced by a solid link, would it simply add vibration to the stick, or worse, like cause it to bind?
I know it will never be as sharp as a rear-drive where the stick is bolted to the tranny, but it's sure sloppy now!
When I had my '57 Baja bug I had put a Hurst clone in it and boy did it improve the feel compared to the stock VW shifter. I'd love to have one of those for the X.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Steven, as far as stock parts go, the things to look for are: The hole in the "lollypop" being worn oval, and the nut/bolt/bushing combo being loose. I would not fasten it solidly due to vibration and binding, but you can file the bushing shorter to tighten up the clearance a lot.
Use a new 6X1.00 nylock nut on the bolt also.
Beyond that, many folks shorten the shift lever itself to shorten the throw. Just take off a little at a time, it's much easier to shorten than lengthen!!!!!!!!,

Also buy a new link to trans bolt, complete with bush and locknut.Replace shifter socket bolt bushes (rubber)with solid nylon short enough that when tight the mounting bolts take the play out of the socket assembly. Replace the steel bush in the yoke at the bottom of the shift lever with a tight fitting, slightly long teflon sleeve. Tighten to zero play.(As teflon is compresed it shrinks around bolt and swells into the yoke.Shorten lever to taste.Check hole in trans rod, if it is not tight on link bolt bush,have new bush made or shim to fit. As you can tell, shift slop bugs me too. My 1st to 2nd shift is now less than 1" total, less than 1/4" play, all in the trans, so far as I can tell.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
