on the inside of the fenders when I make turns.

Let me see how to best explain...
The wheel that is turning IN (front of tire
turning into the well, left tire on right turns
right tire on left turns)
Has VERY LITTLE clearance to the lip of the
front fender.
HOWEVER.
When turning OUT there is plenty of clearance.

I know that this is caster or camber (never can
remember wich) but is this an adjustment on the
X. Or
Could I possibly have the wrong tire size?
Both sides appear to be the same and the body
does not appear to have been damaged in any way
that would cause the front of the car
to be pushed back.
One of the drawbacks to having the only X in town
is I don't have another one to compare it to.

Is it normal for the X to have this much caster
(camber, whatever)?
What are the "correct" tire sizes for the X?

don't worry, this is normal with bigger tires or different offset wheels.
The X fender wells are small.

What is your tire size and what kind of rims are you using?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->As Ulix says, bigger tires or wheels with a different offset could cause your problem. Unless your car had a front end accident, I doubt you got caster problem.

Sagging springs also could be the culprit. In my case, since I'm using bigger wheels/tires with a lowered suspension I completely removed the plastic inner liners. Most of the rubbing are just on that, not on the metal part. In the past, when my set-up was less radical I had cut some of the plastic part that were causing the rubbing.

Finally, if you really got a caster problem, adjustment could be made by adding/removing shims at the trailing arm.

Car may have been lowered. Previous owner
was autocrossing. Again, having the only
one I have ever seen I can't compare it.

Wheels appear to be standard 4 spoke aluminum.
I can try to shoot a picture of the
problem and post it later tonight.

What size should the tires be. I need to
get some new ones and if I can get a
slightly smaller size to stop the tire
from contacting the fender I will.

If you are looking for performance, go with a 185/60. 165/70 also works and was used as stock on later cars.

If you are on a budget and just want to get rid of the rubbing, you could just buy a pair of 165/70s for the front and keep the 175/70s on the back.

1) It does fit standard 5" rims (circa 1980)?

2) It still fits if one lowers the car 1"?

3) I'm not crazy looking at this tire in rain soaked Oregon?

4) anyone know the speedo/tach difference I'll see going from 165/70 to 185/60?

But they need a 5.5 in wheel otherwise it will more than likely be deformed on a 5 in and wear very fast in adition of not performing well.

It's a good tire size. Lower C of G, Wided foot print, increase roadholding and braking.

Since it has a smalled diameter it should fit on a lowered car with no problem if the original 165/70-13 did.

yes the AVSs are a great tire, and since there are hardly any 185/60s left for sale, the AVS is probably the best pure street tire in that size available.

Now your questions:

Yes, fits surpisingly well. It's kind of hard to see, but here are 185/60s on CD91, which I think you have:

Definitely, I currently have AVSs on 6" rims and my car is lowered about 2" in front and 1" in the rear.

You are quite right that wheel diameter actually vary between manufacturers, and also the "effective diameter" might be different once the car is on the ground depending on its construction ( the tire's)

But the Falken 185/60s I have used in the past lasted for a very long time under often hardcore driving conditions. They are not very expensive either, less than the Yokos last I checked.

You might also see them under the Ohtsu name, which I think is Falken's parent company?

Anyway, it has been pointed out to me by some already that, for the minimal price difference, the Yoko is a better choice. I have yet to try Yokos personally (I will on my next tire purchase) but for a cheap street tire that does all that I have asked of it, and lasted a long time, the Falken has earned at least an honorable mention from me FWIW

I seem to have started an interesting thread here.

So.. Now you all have me conviced that I want
185/60 but they are hard to find and expensive.

Called today and found they could be spcial
ordered for $81/each (plus all those hidden
tire charges, mounting, banancing, disposal of the
old tires, fee for disposing of the new tires some day, etc,e tc,etc.)

But this car is really just a daily driver and
don't need the high pref. tires anyway so I suppose
it is going to be a set of 165/70s for now.

Cant really see spending nearly 1/2 of what
the whole car cost me on a set of tires.

But thanks for all the help...
BTW Ulix.. I have sent paypal for a couple of

However, if the car has been lowered too much even for AVS's, there is an even higher-performance alternative - admittedly, with a dry-weather bias - the Yokohama 032R tire, in 175/60-13 size! This lunatic tire was, according to Yokohama, designed for racing-school use (the 175/60-13 is a "plus 3" size for mini-coopers). My X1/9 buddy has a set on his X, and he reports slightly higher dry traction than 185 AVS's, with "very reasonable" wet traction. Good Luck!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
