I have a question - I need to replace my fuel filter, and for once it is a part that my local parts store carries, so I don't have to order it! :)

Anyway, they aren't cheap... I think it was $22.00 - and I'm wondering if I really need to use this filter. I see these nifty little clear ones with the replaceable element that have the warning "Do not use on fuel injected systems" Why is that? Can I use another filter that has the same hose OD? SOme were only 3 or 4 bucks...

Not trying to be cheap (a lie) :) but just curious.

the fuel pressure in a carb system is between 2 and 6 psi. The pressure in an FI system is much higher, not sure, maybe around 20psi?

That cute little glass filter would just blow up...

Maybe I just had luck.

Invest your money into a real filter. You won't like the idea on having a problem because you saved 20 $.

reading up on the Bosch L-Jetronic FI system. Fuel pressure is regulated at about 36 psi, but the pump can put out something like 60 psi (don't put in cheap fuel hose). The filter is good to something like a few micron particulate size. This is because there is nothing between the fuel tank and the injectors except the pump, the filter, and a few centimeters of hose (don't ask me to convert the psi to MPa). I checked the price of injectors, and each one costs just a bit more than the price of a filter (!!) and are considerably harder to service.

This past Sunday I replaced mine also, originally went looking for the Bosch with no luck and I ended buying one at NAPA their "Gold Seal" (?)
That supposed to be their greatest (and obviously the most expensive).

Once you drive your car you will forget about the cost, it's hard to believe how much of a difference a new fuel filter will do for the engine performance (and the mileage too)

As for the glass filter; don't even think of it, follow Ulix advice.
