Both are hard to find and there is a tendancy to end up on 3 or 4th instead of 1st or second. Is there an easy way to fix this since I am not sure how to adjust the linkage to compensate. Sounds like the gearshift linkage is out of adjustment. That seems the most likely suspect anyway. The link that connects the shifter arm to the transmission (located under the car) would be the first thing to try...

Firstly, either chock the tires or get the car off the ground - either way, make sure it won't roll away with you under it. Then get the car in neutral. Go under the car to the linkage point (the joint securing the shifter arm to the tranny, also known as the "sandwich joint" or "lollipop") and slacken the bolts that hold it together. Just slack them enough to allow a little play.

Move the whole thing around a little. Usually just a little bit of tweaking is all it will take, as the pieces do tend to 'want' to line up. Chances are it is only slightly off-center, which could translate into a bigger miss up at the gearshifter. Make sure that the connecting rod coming from the gearshifter end is as well-centered in its tunnel as possible, because if it is not, it could be impacting one side of this tunnel when you try to shift, making those gears hard (or impossible) to get at.

It's really not a big job, just make sure the pieces are lining up well, and watch that little tunnel the rod is coming out of. Let us know how it goes, and we can go into it further if need be. Peace, -Mac.

If you can't get it to line up by changing which linkage end is above the other, try inverting the lollipop linkage
(with the rubber isolator in it) and fitting it again.

I suspect that this is the problem but I wasn't sure how to adjust the linkage. When I took it apart I just disconnected the single bolt to the transmission shift arm and I figured just bolting it back would be easy. After all how far out can you be (sigh).
I assume that to adjust I undo the sandwhich connector but I have no idea which way to move it to get first and second to work better. I drove it to work today and it seems to be a bit better but still tends to want to go from first (difficult to get into) to 4th. I will wiggle curse etc tonight and report the results tomorrow. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->...is to ensure that the gear shift lever itself is centered as well as possible in the middle of the neutral part of its H shaped gate, THEN to ensure the rod is centered well in its tunnel under the car. If both of these are not true, it might not line up right. It is doable alone, but very helpful if you have a second person to hold the gearshift knob dead-center whilst you 'wiggle' down below.
