The tips do come off from the levers. Try using a small flatblade screwdriver and insert through the window provided in the tip.
Pull evenly on the tip with screwdriver ramping over the protrusion.
The trick is to get the tip to slide past the protrusion on the lever flat.
Most often the nylon on the tip will have to be stretched until a small tear appears at the vee area of the tip.
The tear will not be significant enough to prevent reinstallation or having to scrap the tip.
( I just did the radio faceplate and had to remove the AC/Heat faceplate for a slight repair...)

The tips do come off from the levers. Try using a small flatblade screwdriver and insert through the window provided in the tip.
