Got in touch with John Minnic who won the eBay Snorkle and he is willing to allow us (someone) to make a female mold from it.
I don't know where he is yet but shipping it back and forth is a possibility also.
He just needs it back by May 3rd. He's also interested in locating a hood and I already sent him to Derrick at Giant.
In return... he's interested in a discount on one of the new snorkles... Hmmmmm, I would think we could "afford" to let him have a couple, gratis!
Now... who is it on this site that has the capability to make a mold? And then possibly make some snorkles afterwards?
(I know how its done, I bet I could do it... but I've never done it before... is there an interested "pro" out there???)

It would be a nice plastic instead of fiberglass. He can also do other things, lenses, bumpers and whatever you want. I was thinking about having a set of 74 style bumpers made. The plastic is VERY durable and much lighter. How about front spoilers for the 74-87 X1/9s, he can do it.

1. Yes, Snorkles are USUALLY directed straight down the carb throat... like the scoop of a Top-Fuel Dragster... or directed down with a piece of flex tubing. The Australian one "appears" to direct air in the "vicinity" of the intakes... Which I feel negates a lot of its effectiveness.

2. In the case of the Australian version... it would both cool the engine compartment and force SOME air down the carbs.
3. In most cases, yes, the snorkle must be removed, in the Australian case, it appears to unfasten and is hinged to clear.
I have to date, made a "snorkle" of sorts out of the stock left side cooling vent. I removed the vent and fashioned a tin can transition from a square to a 2 1/8" round output. Then I attached 10 bucks worth of flex hose, riveted in place, taped and painted flat black... and then ducted to the input snorkle of the STOCK air cleaner. I cut the stock air cleaner snorkle back until the OVAL diameter matched the diameter of the round flex hose. Two large screw clamps and I was done.
I feel about a 3-5 HP gain at 80 mph... and the air pressure on the side of the car is not that great.
The air pressure over the TOP of the Targa Bar is probably TWICE that of the side panels as it accelerates over the windscreen. That's why the ABARTH snorkle is located where it is.

Seems to me that a proper snorkel for a street car would have to have considerably larger intake opening, be situated behind the driver to avoid obstructing rear view(allowing for fuel refills), and have a true function, like intercooling, or oil cooling as Cosentino's did. It is difficult for me to visualize something like this that doesn't spoil the lines of the car. If, however, you're runnning a Dallara body kit, or flares and huge tires, I suppose it looks more at home. Still looks too small for anything under 100mph.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Got in touch with John Minnic who won the eBay Snorkle and he is willing to allow us (someone) to make a female mold from it.
I don't know where he is yet but shipping it back and forth is a possibility also.
He just needs it back by May 3rd. He's also interested in locating a hood and I already sent him to Derrick at Giant.
In return... he's interested in a discount on one of the new snorkles... Hmmmmm, I would think we could "afford" to let him have a couple, gratis!
Now... who is it on this site that has the capability to make a mold? And then possibly make some snorkles afterwards?
(I know how its done, I bet I could do it... but I've never done it before... is there an interested "pro" out there???)

It would be a nice plastic instead of fiberglass. He can also do other things, lenses, bumpers and whatever you want. I was thinking about having a set of 74 style bumpers made. The plastic is VERY durable and much lighter. How about front spoilers for the 74-87 X1/9s, he can do it.

1. Yes, Snorkles are USUALLY directed straight down the carb throat... like the scoop of a Top-Fuel Dragster... or directed down with a piece of flex tubing. The Australian one "appears" to direct air in the "vicinity" of the intakes... Which I feel negates a lot of its effectiveness.

2. In the case of the Australian version... it would both cool the engine compartment and force SOME air down the carbs.
3. In most cases, yes, the snorkle must be removed, in the Australian case, it appears to unfasten and is hinged to clear.
I have to date, made a "snorkle" of sorts out of the stock left side cooling vent. I removed the vent and fashioned a tin can transition from a square to a 2 1/8" round output. Then I attached 10 bucks worth of flex hose, riveted in place, taped and painted flat black... and then ducted to the input snorkle of the STOCK air cleaner. I cut the stock air cleaner snorkle back until the OVAL diameter matched the diameter of the round flex hose. Two large screw clamps and I was done.
I feel about a 3-5 HP gain at 80 mph... and the air pressure on the side of the car is not that great.
The air pressure over the TOP of the Targa Bar is probably TWICE that of the side panels as it accelerates over the windscreen. That's why the ABARTH snorkle is located where it is.

The snorkel is hinged in the back and has pins on the front. Shipping was quoted as $40AU or $20US. It is a good design and the snorkel is cleaner than the ebay one.

our snorkel is a quality reproduction coming in 3 types
1300 covers, 1500 engine covers and twin cam style
not to mention we have all ready reproduced the front spoilers and almost every other panel in glass

Seems to me that a proper snorkel for a street car would have to have considerably larger intake opening, be situated behind the driver to avoid obstructing rear view(allowing for fuel refills), and have a true function, like intercooling, or oil cooling as Cosentino's did. It is difficult for me to visualize something like this that doesn't spoil the lines of the car. If, however, you're runnning a Dallara body kit, or flares and huge tires, I suppose it looks more at home. Still looks too small for anything under 100mph.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
