I just recently purchased a 1976 X that is in good shape. I'm wanting to restore the car completely. I would like to put in a later model dash and console because mine is cracked and I'd prefer a place for a radio as opposed to the black radio cover that is poorly retrofitted that I currently have. I'm also wanting to put in a 1500 engine and 5 speed tranny.
Looking for suggestions on building the new engine to get more speed! Also, should I put on sway bars?
Any help that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

As for updating your '76 with a 1500 powerplant and 5 speed... all is doable with what I believe the only "oddity" being a replacement or "notching" of the left rear lower control arm to clear the 5-speeds additional size.
Engines and tran's are difficult to find in ready to run condition and expensive to purchase or sublet.
So how attuned are ya at doing this kinda work yourself?
As for the 1300 and the 4 speed... there are many options, including Perry's, that can provide great increases in power... and the 4 speed is generally considered to be a "better", stronger trans. I believe the final drives are about the same also.

To install a 1500 engine with a five speed transmission into a pre-79 ‘X, you will
need to replace the hubs as well, since the shafts and CV joints are not the same on the four and five speed transmissions.
I think the easiest and cheapest way would be to locate a good 1500 ‘X donor, that way you would be able to swap the control arms (front and rear), hubs, shafts, and also the complete interior would be already there.
Lalo, already did exactly what you are trying to accomplish and his car came out awesome, he even went the extra mile and installed a PBS big valve head, a ’74 free flow exhaust manifold, K&N filter etc, etc…
Also it depends where do you live, since in CA there are plenty of X’s that are fairly accessible price wise.
If you live in CA, give me a ring and perhaps I can guide you in the right direction.

There aren't to many x's just lying around here that I've found as of yet. I have sent Lalo an email regarding his retrofit of the dash. As far as asking a question that has already been answered, I apologize. I'll try to do more research first the next time.
The only person that I know of currently in Boise that is an X head is the guy I bought the car from. Is there anyone else here in potato country? Drop a line if your out there and willing to give a newbie some help and advice.

To install a 1500 engine with a five speed transmission into a pre-79 ‘X, you will
need to replace the hubs as well, since the shafts and CV joints are not the same on the four and five speed transmissions.
I think the easiest and cheapest way would be to locate a good 1500 ‘X donor, that way you would be able to swap the control arms (front and rear), hubs, shafts, and also the complete interior would be already there.
Lalo, already did exactly what you are trying to accomplish and his car came out awesome, he even went the extra mile and installed a PBS big valve head, a ’74 free flow exhaust manifold, K&N filter etc, etc…
Also it depends where do you live, since in CA there are plenty of X’s that are fairly accessible price wise.

There aren't to many x's just lying around here that I've found as of yet. I have sent Lalo an email regarding his retrofit of the dash. As far as asking a question that has already been answered, I apologize. I'll try to do more research first the next time.
The only person that I know of currently in Boise that is an X head is the guy I bought the car from. Is there anyone else here in potato country? Drop a line if your out there and willing to give a newbie some help and advice.
