It doesn't state, but it does imply that it would NOT be necessary to ring the head.
Since it is a supercharger rather than a turbine, the charge cooler isn't strictly necessary (although it does of course give you even more bang-for-buck) but keep in mind that intercoolers are generally AS expensive as the compressor. I think the best bet in this instance would be to obtain a 'cooler from a donor car and fabricate the system to suit. Cool air induction kits seem to run at about £140 in the UK and that is just a box, filter and plumbing. Adapting the system to include an intercooler shouldn't prove too difficult!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Much as I love driving my standard X1/9, I cant help but think the delicate old girl would just fall apart with that much power (180 BHP or something!), the gear box would just disintegrate, the clutch would melt, and if you ever got the thing moving for more than 5 minutes the brakes sure as hell wouldn’t stop you!, the engine mounts would probably soon fail, along with probably everything else, the chassis was simply not built to withstand any more power than what a Strada engine could throw at it, you would have to seriously strengthen the chassis and almost everything else to make the car safe and drivable with no long term wear and tear problems, I'd rather waste my money on, dare I say it an MR2 supercharged jap import which would be infinitely more reliable, all I’m trying to say is fitting a supercharger is a great idea but not cheap, I hope Airmax don’t start selling supercharged standard X1/9's without at least uprated assisted braking and a stronger gear box/ engine mounts etc., or the cars will be dangerous in my opinion.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The X190s might look like X1/9s with big wings/fenders but the mechancials are all pretty heavily modified (you didn't think the price of an X190 was just for the body kit?)
There are examples of X1/9s running around with over 200bhp using uno turbo engines and this is on the road!
Brakes aren't too much of a problem, the standard calipers aren't brilliant but when looked after (ie serviced regularly like they're supposed to be) they are more than adequate when coupled with proper brake lines, decent hydraulic fluid, high performance discs and suitable pads. A case in point would be Bruce's X1/9 that runs in Auto Italia - he has to run a standard setup (more or less) with black diamond discs and pads (if I remember right) - his X1/9 can outbrake the entire field and that really is saying something when you consider just how much money is spent on some of the cars (Enzo's Alfa is on it's third engine this year and we reckon he spends about £10k-£15k on each and that's just the engine!)
I know there are an awful lot of Xs out there that couldn't handle the power (certainly in the UK) but I don't think you're doing the car credit (although I do agree with the gearbox statement!)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The Uno turbo engine in it's standard form is only pushing 110 BHP,not much really and no problem in the X1/9, you may even get away with standard disks/pads, but if you up the boost pressure and map the ECU to run at 200BHP GOOD LUCK, I bet the engine spends most of it's life in pieces in the garage! poor little thing

I have modified my X to run a 1600cc with more power than the Uno and have maintained standard brakes without problems. BlondMoto strongly suggests upgrading the brakes to the UnoTurbo's whenever they do an engine swap. In fact, it is a requirement if you want to insure the car in the UK. The bolt on theory would give you about 110-120bhp, strangely enough this is about the sort of level that the car is still comfortable at.
The system (from what I've seen) is still fuelled through a carburettor to make things simpler.
All told I would expect the basic conversion to weigh in at somewhere between £500 and £1000. The point of this is that it IS a bolt-on system and doesn't require major surgery, simpler even than a turbo swap! Brake upgrades if you were worried would add up to another £300 all in. For the same money you could perform a turbo swap, spend a lot of time swapping gearbox components over, mixing and matching, plumbing everything in and wiring in an alien ignition and fuelling loom. In terms of labour the supercharger would make MUCH more sense.
The £6000 is for a full blown 180bhp X190. At a guess I would say over half that money is spent purely on the engine....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

A car in good condition wouldn't need much improvement to handle a serious power hike, but the facts are simple - most cars lose 50% of their chassis rigidity within the first 3 years of their "life". Throw in all of the tin-worm, and poor QC and it is easy to see that most cars would need the work. There are some exceptionally good cars out there but even they will have suffered loss of structural integrity over the years.
On the other hand just remember that the X1/9 still sits at the "luke-warm" hatch performance level. It's a little over weight but the majority of the performance cars on the market with comparable engine size have similar power output and similar gearing. The difference is that they are ALL front wheel drive. I loved my old MkI XR2, it was great fun and had similar performance to the X, but it still couldn't come close. More important is that the brakes and suspension on many of these cars (and their bigger brothers) are similar in performance to those on the X (they might be newer - but it doesn't make them better, well maybe...).
The key fact is that the X was (with the exception of that darned gearbox) quite significantly over-engineered in many ways. The engine is pretty bullet-proof as is the chassis. The suspension layout, while somewhat archaic by modern standards, is more than adequate.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

They were the demise of my first X - having spent two hours driving like a demon through the country lanes between Waddesdon and Thame I headed home and got stuck in a traffic jam on the way into Aylesbury - and promptly drove into a stationary Sierra Estate! Why? because some daft sod had set up a miniature railway at the roadside (outside Perry's) and it distracted me as I rolled the car forwards in the traffic jam!
It was only a 10mph (tops) shunt - but it destroyed the rear subframe of the Sierra and put a nice dent in the nose of my car (where my bumper had twisted up and fouled against the bodywork)

It doesn't state, but it does imply that it would NOT be necessary to ring the head.
Since it is a supercharger rather than a turbine, the charge cooler isn't strictly necessary (although it does of course give you even more bang-for-buck) but keep in mind that intercoolers are generally AS expensive as the compressor. I think the best bet in this instance would be to obtain a 'cooler from a donor car and fabricate the system to suit. Cool air induction kits seem to run at about £140 in the UK and that is just a box, filter and plumbing. Adapting the system to include an intercooler shouldn't prove too difficult!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The X190s might look like X1/9s with big wings/fenders but the mechancials are all pretty heavily modified (you didn't think the price of an X190 was just for the body kit?)
There are examples of X1/9s running around with over 200bhp using uno turbo engines and this is on the road!
Brakes aren't too much of a problem, the standard calipers aren't brilliant but when looked after (ie serviced regularly like they're supposed to be) they are more than adequate when coupled with proper brake lines, decent hydraulic fluid, high performance discs and suitable pads. A case in point would be Bruce's X1/9 that runs in Auto Italia - he has to run a standard setup (more or less) with black diamond discs and pads (if I remember right) - his X1/9 can outbrake the entire field and that really is saying something when you consider just how much money is spent on some of the cars (Enzo's Alfa is on it's third engine this year and we reckon he spends about £10k-£15k on each and that's just the engine!)
I know there are an awful lot of Xs out there that couldn't handle the power (certainly in the UK) but I don't think you're doing the car credit (although I do agree with the gearbox statement!)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The Uno turbo engine in it's standard form is only pushing 110 BHP,not much really and no problem in the X1/9, you may even get away with standard disks/pads, but if you up the boost pressure and map the ECU to run at 200BHP GOOD LUCK, I bet the engine spends most of it's life in pieces in the garage! poor little thing

I have modified my X to run a 1600cc with more power than the Uno and have maintained standard brakes without problems. BlondMoto strongly suggests upgrading the brakes to the UnoTurbo's whenever they do an engine swap. In fact, it is a requirement if you want to insure the car in the UK. The bolt on theory would give you about 110-120bhp, strangely enough this is about the sort of level that the car is still comfortable at.
The system (from what I've seen) is still fuelled through a carburettor to make things simpler.
All told I would expect the basic conversion to weigh in at somewhere between £500 and £1000. The point of this is that it IS a bolt-on system and doesn't require major surgery, simpler even than a turbo swap! Brake upgrades if you were worried would add up to another £300 all in. For the same money you could perform a turbo swap, spend a lot of time swapping gearbox components over, mixing and matching, plumbing everything in and wiring in an alien ignition and fuelling loom. In terms of labour the supercharger would make MUCH more sense.
The £6000 is for a full blown 180bhp X190. At a guess I would say over half that money is spent purely on the engine....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

A car in good condition wouldn't need much improvement to handle a serious power hike, but the facts are simple - most cars lose 50% of their chassis rigidity within the first 3 years of their "life". Throw in all of the tin-worm, and poor QC and it is easy to see that most cars would need the work. There are some exceptionally good cars out there but even they will have suffered loss of structural integrity over the years.
On the other hand just remember that the X1/9 still sits at the "luke-warm" hatch performance level. It's a little over weight but the majority of the performance cars on the market with comparable engine size have similar power output and similar gearing. The difference is that they are ALL front wheel drive. I loved my old MkI XR2, it was great fun and had similar performance to the X, but it still couldn't come close. More important is that the brakes and suspension on many of these cars (and their bigger brothers) are similar in performance to those on the X (they might be newer - but it doesn't make them better, well maybe...).
The key fact is that the X was (with the exception of that darned gearbox) quite significantly over-engineered in many ways. The engine is pretty bullet-proof as is the chassis. The suspension layout, while somewhat archaic by modern standards, is more than adequate.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I live in North Buckinghamshire, a very rural part of Southern England, LOTS of country roads, you know the sort, lots of sharp bends, a few long straight bits, all good X country, the other day I was out with my top off, and a boy racer in a Citroen Saxo VVTi was on my case, he obviously wanted a race, so down goes the on/off switch, sure he was right on my tail (read: keeping up) on the straight, but once we hit a few bends I soon lost him, AND I was being carfull not to do anything silly, this has happened on numerous occasions and every time I easily loose them!, that's if they even bother trying

They were the demise of my first X - having spent two hours driving like a demon through the country lanes between Waddesdon and Thame I headed home and got stuck in a traffic jam on the way into Aylesbury - and promptly drove into a stationary Sierra Estate! Why? because some daft sod had set up a miniature railway at the roadside (outside Perry's) and it distracted me as I rolled the car forwards in the traffic jam!
It was only a 10mph (tops) shunt - but it destroyed the rear subframe of the Sierra and put a nice dent in the nose of my car (where my bumper had twisted up and fouled against the bodywork)
The moral of this story - don't get caught in traffic!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
