Also I'm using a 128 block and a fellow(Stephen White)in his May 26,2000 thread tapped and closed off the coolant passages on top of the block under the head for the manifold pre-heat lines. Is this necessary? The 128 block seems to have it's little problems when it comes to coolant leakage. The reason I decided to re-torqued the Fel-Pro gasket is because the previous gasket lasted only one year, that is why after I installed the second gasket I re-torqued the bolts after +/- 500 miles. Even if Fel-Pro says is not required.

But there are some people out there that say that the re-torque procedure is not required, but next time I have to replace the head gasket, I will be re-torquening (?) afterwards. (it worked for me)

If I remember correctly, you torque the 1500 head bolts to an specific number (ft/lb), only at the begining of the procedure, thereafter you must turn the bolts in two 90 degrees increments (for a total of 180)

I remember that the re-torque was performed in two increments of 45 degrees for a total of 90 degrees.

I will like to verify these figures, but I can't find the data that Lalo sent me with the detailed procedures. I will keep looking for and hopefully let you know soon.

I talked to a fellow at Bayless today and he said the proper way to re-torque was to back off the studs and bolts a couple of turns and re-torque to the original value. I don't know whether that's hot or cold,dummy me I forgot to ask. I have a 1300 so I suspect the values are different. Back to the books for some research. BTW my engine has 4 large bolts on the spark plug side between the head hold down bolts and near the plugs. It's a 128 A1 .040 6 out of a 76 3P. Do you know what these bolts were for? I can't remember if they are 12mmX1.25 or 10mmX1.25... you can replace them with allen head bolts for a much cleaner look,

Somebody at Mirafiori's mentioned a few days ago that if you cleaned and oiled the bolts before installation then you don't have to loose them before re-torque, it make sense to me.

Please remember to re-torque with the engine completely cold!! (preferably overnight)

JP, Also you are mentioning that you have the 1300, I don't know if the 45 degree for a total of 90 applies to your engine or only applies to the latter 1500 cars, I will read my shop manual, because I believe that the earlier engines get re-torqued using a torque wrench to a certain value.

Perhaps Steve Ambrose would be able to confirm this information, so you do it properly and I will check my shop manual tonight.

I use Fel-Pro head gaskets exclusively now, and I don't normally re-torque them(but I doubt it would hurt to).. On standard head gaskets I loosen the bolt or nut slightly(1/8 turn) and then bring it back to 69 ft-lbs. Do this cold, one at a time, in the correct pattern. Good luck,
