My first "italian love affair" was a 1984 X1/9 and the latest fling is a 1978 x1/9 with a 1500 transplant. My question to anyone who can help is, can I increase the final drive ratio in the four speed box without affecting the other gears? The previous owner had lower springs and low profile tyres fitted and this has reduced the fuel economy somewhat and makes the car very noisy at any speed over 70kph. Changing to standard profiles will create clearance probs in the wheel arches. I would prefer to stick to the four speed box because of its strength and otherwise better matched ratios. If needs be Ill change the diff ratio, if it is possible. If this is not possible and I am forced to go back to the original springs and clearance, how would fourteen inch rims go on the car? I live in Australia and the distances we sometimes travel make higer ratios a godsend.

the original (and european) ratio is 4.08:1, the later US cars had 4.42:1.
Do you know which one you have?

I know there are 3.xx ratios for the 5-speed, I don't know if this is true for the 4-speed.
What size tire are you using? 175/50-13?

Im glad I stumbled across your site guys. It was getting sort of stressful doing it alone.
The car needs plenty of work, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
I had the RAC check it over before I bought her and they tied pretty red labels on everything, you beauty I thought, Christmas decorations. Then on closer inspection the words THIS VEHICLE MUST NOT BE DRIVEN! could be seen. Most of them are now fixed and they helped to drive the price into the ground so Merry Christmas to you Mr RAC. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Yes you are right it is good to hear from people with the same impecable taste in cars. (we wont discuss my Mitsubishi Magna which goes; like a snail on valium and has the handling characteristics and grace of an inebriated camel).
Ive read with interest the tips on changing hub stud patterns and may consider changing the rims (to 14s) when these tyres wear out. This will be a while as the PO put brand new tyres on before selling. Steve

As Ulix noted, the X1/9 came with 4.08:1 (13/53) and 4.41:1 (12/53) final drive ratios. To get taller gearing, you will have to change the differential ratio, as there are precious few alternate ratios for the transmission. In the USA, the '78 and '79 model 128 had a 3.76:1 (17/64) final drive. If you can find one of these, you will be able to set up your car for long distance (and I assume high speed) cruising. Knock around the boneyards and see what you can find. This ring and pinion will bolt right in. I have run this setup using a 1600 cc stroker motor in an X1/9 and it worked well. BTW four speed and five speed R&P sets do not interchange. The bolt pattern on the ring gear is different.
