How restrictive is stock muffler?

True Classic
Hey, everyone loves exhaust threads. My 1500 now has a Vics header attached to the stock muffler. I'm actually happy with the sound, Nice and quiet for cruising at 80 in a 4-speed car without sounding like I'm being chased by a large sewing machine. Just curious if the stock muffler is a good flowing muffler (it's certainly very large). Would I pick up significant performance with a straight through muffler? Running a 34 DAT.

I think only a DYNO could really tell...

... and of course, generally at the expense of the sound.

My butt tells me though, that one would think that a somewhat larger diameter pipe would HAVETA net a better flowing exhaust without hurting low end torque or impacting a scavenger action... resulting in a few more ponies.

You mentioned the header and carb, but not necessarily a more radical cam or larger valves... and if you have those, then I'm sure you would want to go to a about a 2" system.

Alas... as I said initially... only a dyno, lap times or quarter mile times would PROVE the gain...

But don't let me stand in your way of having fun or spending money!

HA!

!

Everything comes with a cost. Flow=noise. Quiet=backpressure OR Quiet=weight (if you have a really BIG muffler you can keep the flow up and noise down).

I run a stock muffler with no problem (of course the contents of the catalytic converter were apparently lost or stolen, no comment).

Other improvements to flow would be through tuning to specific RPM bands using "wave" technology. If you're that rich, why not buy a Ferarri?

The less curves there are in the exhaust and shorter the better. You may want to try to put a 6 inch straight pipe 2 inches in diameter off the headers with a suppertrapp muffler on the back for performance. Good flow there and tunable for sound.

No kidding Eddie... Did ya file a police report?

My entire CAT was STOLEN... I'm almost positive!

So they just stole just the guts outta yours? The nerve of those thieving bastards! There oughtta be a law!

Same thing happened to me

Exactly. CAT guts and the case untouched...
Same thieves?
No law either,
what a world... HaHaHa

Precious metal theft

Is pretty prevalent. I wish fences, I mean recyclers, were more picky about where stuff came from.

It's only logical that the thieves would get better and better. Makes me wonder if I should check my X. The cat guts on my Vanagon were stolen (I assume) when the dreaded P.O. had it.:brow:

for about 3 seconds until your eardrums explode (or you wish they would) :D

You guys are as bad as MIRA....

When it comes to vectoring off topic! I was hoping maybe someone had real time experience and or dyno time. My local buddys with aftermarket or homemade exhaust have Xs that are way too loud (and even they admit it). The motor is internally stock.

Mira is one of five Trainers who can join with the main character during an event in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Later, she can join the player in competition at Sinnoh's Battle Tower. She first appears in the Wayward Cave. She got lost inside looking for Pokémon and needs to be escorted out. Mira says she prefers using support moves like Flash. Mira seems to admire the player, saying that she wants to be like the player when she grows up. She also tends to refer to herself in the third person; using her own name instead of saying "I". This is typical in Japanese, where it is used to indicate femininity or childishness

To answer your question though the stock exhaust isnt the problem, its the manifold. Most hollow out the cat or fit a test pipe in place of a cat..or ditch the stock stuff completely and use headers and custom exhaust
