Could you be a little more specific like if you coast in neutral still makes the noise?, or does get worse while turning?
If it's a constant pitch, could be a hub bearing but if "rumbles" could be a CV joint.
How loud it is?, try to find a loong downhill street that will let you coast with the engine off.

I've read the Obert tech article about replacing wheel bearings - is it really as scary as they make it sound? What about the special tool? DO you really need it? Anyone have one that they would be willing to loan out?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->They are really not that hard to do. The hardest part is getting the darn hub off the car. Be careful when you press in the new bearing, as the last thing you want is for it to be at an angle.
As for taking out the retaining ring, a cold chisel will work very well. If you decided that you do need the tool, I have one that I would be happy to loan to you.
