I am seriously thinking of getting another one after a considerable hiatus. I just hope that I will be able to find a deal like some of the people in these threads have found. Carb or not to carb that is the ?. What do you think friends. Which way should I go. All three in the past were carb and had very few probs with them. Except sliding on sand in the middle of an intersection in the middle of summer and hittin a pole right next to the road. She was a beauty. Had it towed first time. Second time was beside the freeway in the middle of nowhere. Was prepared that time. As far as choosing a car, my personal preference is for simplicity. Earlier the better. Apparently the early FI models are not that complicated. All of mine have been carb models. It is very hard to justify investing large sums of money in resurrecting a rusted hulk. All the hard stuff was finished and the last thing to do was to put water in the expansion tank so I could fire it up for the first time this century (kinda weird to think about that one)and a few seconds later...
I looked under the car and saw some water pouring out of the radiator pipe sheet metal enclosure box that runs the length of the passenger compartment. You know what I'm talking about - THE worst place to have a bad radiator pipe on an X. It means you have to cut the entire length of the box on both sides, then cut the welds to remove the bad pipe(s) and then weld the new stuff in place, then weld the cover back on.
Lots of work.
I thought I had an ice-cracked radiator pipe because this car had an EGR housing cracked from ice. Well it turned out to be just a bad heater core pipe instead. Whew! I guess I was fortunate. Summer is coming so I won't even need the heater core (wishful thinking).
Is there a quick fix to this kind of problem? I suppose I could simply run a new hose or something. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Seven years later I tried to give it away (Charities...) and when that didn't work, I thought I'd try and get it running and sell it or make it easier to give away...
I finally got the pump out, found another at Pep Boys, put in a 39 dollar battery... changed the oil, filter, plugs and squirted oil in the cylinders.
Hit on the forth crank... Idled on the seventh... drove it 2 hours with two pints of FI cleaner in a 1/2 full tank of 7 year old gas... added more and have been a happy man ever since!
It has 148K on the original engine with a second trans, and runs better than it ever did!
I'm not sure that owning more than one is the thing to do... just ask Jeff Zucker on this web.
Its a lot of "balls to juggle"!

I am seriously thinking of getting another one after a considerable hiatus. I just hope that I will be able to find a deal like some of the people in these threads have found. Carb or not to carb that is the ?. What do you think friends. Which way should I go. All three in the past were carb and had very few probs with them. Except sliding on sand in the middle of an intersection in the middle of summer and hittin a pole right next to the road. She was a beauty. Anyway, any advice and does anyone have a good deal that they are willing to pass up and pass on to someone else, NOT. Waiting for replies,

All the hard stuff was finished and the last thing to do was to put water in the expansion tank so I could fire it up for the first time this century (kinda weird to think about that one)and a few seconds later...
I looked under the car and saw some water pouring out of the radiator pipe sheet metal enclosure box that runs the length of the passenger compartment. You know what I'm talking about - THE worst place to have a bad radiator pipe on an X. It means you have to cut the entire length of the box on both sides, then cut the welds to remove the bad pipe(s) and then weld the new stuff in place, then weld the cover back on.
Lots of work.
I thought I had an ice-cracked radiator pipe because this car had an EGR housing cracked from ice. Well it turned out to be just a bad heater core pipe instead. Whew! I guess I was fortunate. Summer is coming so I won't even need the heater core (wishful thinking).
Is there a quick fix to this kind of problem? I suppose I could simply run a new hose or something. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Seven years later I tried to give it away (Charities...) and when that didn't work, I thought I'd try and get it running and sell it or make it easier to give away...
I finally got the pump out, found another at Pep Boys, put in a 39 dollar battery... changed the oil, filter, plugs and squirted oil in the cylinders.
Hit on the forth crank... Idled on the seventh... drove it 2 hours with two pints of FI cleaner in a 1/2 full tank of 7 year old gas... added more and have been a happy man ever since!
It has 148K on the original engine with a second trans, and runs better than it ever did!
I'm not sure that owning more than one is the thing to do... just ask Jeff Zucker on this web.
Its a lot of "balls to juggle"!
