A while ago I used to tow a small sailboat (Laser) behind my X'with no trouble at all,
However that wasn't a real heavy tow. And I made the hitch using a 1 1/2 steel angle stock, that was bolted to the towing brackets (parallelling (?) the bumper)
And the tongue with the 1 3/4 ball was bolted to the steel bracket and to the bottom of the rear bumper with one big bolt at each end.
I never had any problems (70/80 mph!), but keep in mind that the sailboat was light and the trailer was specially designed for it.

the main tow is a 850 lb (fully loaded) utility trailer i use for sca events and so on...
i know the car can pull it easily, i'm just worried about the hitch.
so a peice of angle iron with 4 holes drilled in it to bolt to the stock bumper mounts, and a 5th hole for the tow ball works?

Actually I didn't bolted the angled iron bar to the base of the bumper shocks, I bolted the ends of the bar to the towing hooks that are welded onto the X's frame.
If I remember correctly (15+ years latter) I sawed the angled bar at both ends a couple of inches each side, (right at the radius), then bended one of the tabs 90 degrees at each end and drilled a hole on each tab, this is where you bolt the bar into the X's frame towing hook.
The towing tongue is bolted into the angled iron (towards the front of the car) and also at the bottom of the bumper, where a large bolt goes through the towing tongue, and the bumper.
All the towing weight will be handled by the angled iron, the bumper will keep the tongue from swining from side to side when you turn.

I also bought a Reeves hitch, the small universal "T" model in chrome. To my surprise, the X1/9 (1979 and up) was listed in their recommandation. I didn't use it exactly like they suggested, but just bolted it underneath the bumper.
Work great for a more than 2000 miles trip.
My only worry was about the bumper shocks that may extend. They didn't move. If you are worried about that, you may drill them to remove the fluid and put a screw in each of them to be sure they won't extend. By doing so you will also got less weight, but they won't absorb any shock anymore!

heh. actually i wanted to tow a laser with it
the main tow is a 850 lb (fully loaded) utility trailer i use for sca events and so on...
i know the car can pull it easily, i'm just worried about the hitch.
so a peice of angle iron with 4 holes drilled in it to bolt to the stock bumper mounts, and a 5th hole for the tow ball works?

Actually I didn't bolted the angled iron bar to the base of the bumper shocks, I bolted the ends of the bar to the towing hooks that are welded onto the X's frame.
If I remember correctly (15+ years latter) I sawed the angled bar at both ends a couple of inches each side, (right at the radius), then bended one of the tabs 90 degrees at each end and drilled a hole on each tab, this is where you bolt the bar into the X's frame towing hook.
The towing tongue is bolted into the angled iron (towards the front of the car) and also at the bottom of the bumper, where a large bolt goes through the towing tongue, and the bumper.
All the towing weight will be handled by the angled iron, the bumper will keep the tongue from swining from side to side when you turn.

I also bought a Reeves hitch, the small universal "T" model in chrome. To my surprise, the X1/9 (1979 and up) was listed in their recommandation. I didn't use it exactly like they suggested, but just bolted it underneath the bumper.
Work great for a more than 2000 miles trip.
My only worry was about the bumper shocks that may extend. They didn't move. If you are worried about that, you may drill them to remove the fluid and put a screw in each of them to be sure they won't extend. By doing so you will also got less weight, but they won't absorb any shock anymore!
