My idle has gradually crept up... from ~1000 to close to 1800. Not all at once mind you, but over the last several weeks.

Further, this morning, my idle was going up and down as I sat at a stoplight... revving up to almost 2k, and then dropping back down to 1k. By the time the car was fully warmed up, it stopped, and was idling "normally" around 1800.

Thoughts? I don't want to mess with it too much, becuse it seems to be running well otherwise.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Doc:

I would check first that the idle screw w/locknut on the intake plenum are not loose, And if you already tried to reduce the RPM's, by turning the screw clockwise without success, then you have to check that you are not having any air leaks into the intake system. Everything after the airflow sensor (I think you are very familiar with it).

It could be a loose hose clamp (hopefully), or one of the smaller hoses or tubes that connect into the big rubber intake (the one that connects the airflow sensor with the intake plenum).

If not you will have to check the intake gaskets, first the two that connect the intake plenum into the intake runners (two "8" shaped gaskets), the other remaining gaskets are the ones shared between the exaust and intake manifolds.

Good luck and let us know how it worked out. Gilles

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I had a similar problem with the '80 and it was in fact that idle screw vibrating around. Couldn't have been an easier fix. Also I once had the reverse problem, car ran fine in motion but died instantly when you drop to idle RPM. Turned out to be a loose hose connection to the big ribbed intake hose. I secured the connection and the issue vanished. Let us know how it goes Doc! -Mac.
