The slats do have the advantage of ducting the air properly. My spoiler has taken a real downward set from hanging just by the end brackets. Much like a shark with an open jaw.
Good protection for the radiator, huh ? The previous owner ignored this little (trivial?) component.

With the use of some heat from a haidryer, I was able to straighten it and then remove it from the jig after it cooled. I then used very stiff wire to "hang" it from the upper grill mounts. I also braced the spoiler with steel straps that I drilled and bolted to the mounts... and glued to the under belly of the spoiler.
Keeps it from drooping and all appears fresh and new.
I like your idea of using distressed metal (diamond or octal shaped) as a grill. Outta look hot in black or gold tucked behind and screwed to the original mounts with washers and ALLEN HEAD bolts!

Like the addition of bracketing to reinforce the existing plastics. One caution on that particular adhesive type, if you weren't aware of it...expose it to 120+F for 40+ minutes and the bond breaks if in an unrestrained condition. i.e. primary bond without through fasteners.
Heard about the paint you mentioned. Sticks real good to plastic ?
Just seen a new advertisement on the TV about the new YUKON. Guess what they were using for a grill ? Flat perforated and plated plate. Hmmmmmmm Seems like building a simple frame with tabs to encase a plate, screen, or distressed might be on the drawing board for my X.

I don't believe there is any real stress on it though where the plastic broke.
As for the Duplicolor Trim Paint.... Yep, it adheres real well to plastics... but not flexing rubber... like a gearshift boot. The black bumper ends on '79s on up are a good example of parts that look like NEW by it.
For the bumper itself, I first used a medium Scotchbrite pad, some cheap black primer, then final coated it with the Trim Paint.
There are other forms of paint like this from Plasticoat (sp) and others but I have not found them to be as authentic looking as the Duplicolor.
As for the custom grill itself... GO FOR IT... have fun, but just don't be too restrictive!

Thinking about building one out of aluminum slats or perhaps an aluminum expanded metal for a real down and dirty approach. Any pics of your own making out here ? The slats do have the advantage of ducting the air properly. My spoiler has taken a real downward set from hanging just by the end brackets. Much like a shark with an open jaw.

With the use of some heat from a haidryer, I was able to straighten it and then remove it from the jig after it cooled. I then used very stiff wire to "hang" it from the upper grill mounts. I also braced the spoiler with steel straps that I drilled and bolted to the mounts... and glued to the under belly of the spoiler.
Keeps it from drooping and all appears fresh and new.
I like your idea of using distressed metal (diamond or octal shaped) as a grill. Outta look hot in black or gold tucked behind and screwed to the original mounts with washers and ALLEN HEAD bolts!

Like the addition of bracketing to reinforce the existing plastics. One caution on that particular adhesive type, if you weren't aware of it...expose it to 120+F for 40+ minutes and the bond breaks if in an unrestrained condition. i.e. primary bond without through fasteners.
Heard about the paint you mentioned. Sticks real good to plastic ?
Just seen a new advertisement on the TV about the new YUKON. Guess what they were using for a grill ? Flat perforated and plated plate. Hmmmmmmm Seems like building a simple frame with tabs to encase a plate, screen, or distressed might be on the drawing board for my X.

I don't believe there is any real stress on it though where the plastic broke.
As for the Duplicolor Trim Paint.... Yep, it adheres real well to plastics... but not flexing rubber... like a gearshift boot. The black bumper ends on '79s on up are a good example of parts that look like NEW by it.
For the bumper itself, I first used a medium Scotchbrite pad, some cheap black primer, then final coated it with the Trim Paint.
There are other forms of paint like this from Plasticoat (sp) and others but I have not found them to be as authentic looking as the Duplicolor.
As for the custom grill itself... GO FOR IT... have fun, but just don't be too restrictive!

I was trying to remove a set of directionals on a stacked up '74 and finally gave up. Didn't wanna climb on wobbly bodies in the wet.
We have a little break in the weather right now and I'm heading down there again this AM.
