"Four additional cylinder head bolts are used on these engines,
adjacent to the spark plugs. Note that their tightening torque
differs from the other cylinder head bolts - see Specifications.
These bolts are tightened separately, after the ten main bolts
(see Fig 13.13)."

The figure shows (iii), (ii), (i), (iv) counting from the
cambelt end of the engine, for the tightening sequence.

The torque specs are:
Cylinder head bolts (ten)
Stage 1 20Nm 15lb/ft
Stage 2 40Nm 30lb/ft
Stage 3 Turn 90 degrees
Stage 4 Turn 90 degrees

Cylinder head bolts adjacent to spark plug holes (four)
30Nm 22lb/ft

You will also need to re-torque the bolts after a hot/cool cycle as follows:

1st-60°
2nd-30°
Total-90°

A year ago I replaced the head gasket and obviously I did not understand clearly the shop manual instructions.

I had torqued the four head bolts adjacent to the spark plug holes the same way as the other ten main bolts I used the cross pattern sequence.

I remember not being completely sure about the condition of the bolts that I used perhaps they where already torqued many times before. Do you know if you can buy these bolts from one of the specialized bolt shops? I remember that they appeared to be grade 8 is there a way to confirm this information?

Last year I took the head to the shop and after the proper examination they told me that the head was slightly wrapped and that the new gasket would compensate for it, that was not absolutely necessarily to resurface it so I didn’t.

BIG mistake…Now after replacing the thermostat housing last week end (It was slightly overheating) I had not being able to bleed the car because after every attempt I get a lot of air out of the system. I bleed the car every time after I drove it with the same results, lots of air.

Last night I plugged the heater hoses and tried to bleed again with no luck also, I noticed that I was getting a lot of bubbles in the reservoir tank.
I think that the air is getting into the cooling system from the head, I guess is time to remove the head and get it overhauled.

I should have done the job properly last time now is too late to cry, so I better stop sobbing and start working. (My wife is going to freak out after I tell her that she will be without her car for a week!)

Do a compression test of all the cylinders (all plugs removed, throttle wide open).

If you have a cylinder(s) that's significantly lower than the others (25 psi or more), then do a cylinder leakdown test on it(them). Replace 3 spark plugs and put the offending cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, so the valves are closed. With a compressor, pressurize the cylinder through the plug hole. It should hold a constant 85 or so psi, but it won't because there's a leak somewhere. If you have a head gasket seeping into the coolant system, you will get bubbles (take the coolant cap off), though this could also mean you have a head crack (less likely based on what you have said). FYI: If there's an intake valve not sealing, you will hear air coming out through the intake. If an exhaust valve is not sealing, you can hear air escaping through the exhaust.

If you have a seeping head gasket, remove the head, have it resurfaced and checked for cracks at a machine shop. If they do this and find no cracks, then put it back on w/a new gasket and follow the proper torque procedure Lalo detailed. W/fingers crossed all should OK. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the tips, they are very clear and seem to be straight forward to follow.
Specially I will know the condition of the valves as well, this will determine just a resurfaced head or a compltetely valve job. ($25 vs $300 + parts)

I don't have an air compressor, I guess I will try to find someone that has a portable air tank (And hope that they a capacity of about 85psi) yesterday, I saw them at Walmart for about $20

I will try to rent a small compressor (Hoping to be cheap), but I guess that it will be necessary to confirm condition of the cylinders before removing the head.

Thanks so much for the info, I do appreciate it. Two followup questions in the area of the re-torqe specs after a hot/cool cycle: Is the 1st 60 deg turn and the 2nd 30 deg tightening done in sequence after one hot/cool cycle, or done separately after two sequential hot/cool cyles? Also, would the re-torquing also include the 4 smaller bolts?
