Open up your engine cover and look around the cooling fluid bottle. You'll find a backup trunk release located behind it. It's just a plastic loop with a wire attached to it. If you want to use your trunk without it locking on you, I recommend unbolting the lock till you get a replacement cable.

There are only a couple of ways I know to get into the rear trunk when both cables are popped. Unfortunately, both ways are destructive, and you'll need a drill & a long screwdriver.
The good news is that the damage you do will not be visible...
One way is to take the plastic lenses off of the right rear taillight assembly, exposing the chromed plastic housing. Drill a hole through the left-hand wall of the reverse light chamber, just about exactly in the center of the chamber wall. The goal is to drill a hole here that you can stick a long screwdriver through. You would insert the screwdriver through the hole, and get the tip straight to the latch assembly (which is located directly behind where the license plate mounts to the car. On the bottom of the latch is a lever where the cable connects. You would have to hit that lever with the screwdriver and push it toward the left side of the car. That would pop the trunklid open...
The other choice that I am aware of would be instead to remove the rear license plate, and drill a hole exactly in the middle of where it was mounted to the car. Then you would poke the screwdriver straight through that hole, and the lever would be directly in front of it. So you would pry the lever to the left, and that would pop the trunklid open.
I am sure there are probably other ways too, but I don't personally know of any that are non-destructive methods. This is a good reason for all of us to check that emergency cable and make sure it is not in bad shape!
Anyway, good luck with it. It's not as difficult as it sounds. Although the hole behind the license plate makes for a straight shot at the latch's lever, I personally prefer the hole in the right rear tail light housing, because you're not drilling metal for one, and for two, when done you can just fill the hole in the plastic with some clear silicone sealant and be done with it. Fixing the hole through the metal is not as simple.

Remove the liscence plate and use the top left hole to put a coat hanger wire through. If you can find anything thinner use it. Catch the release for the lock and it will pop open. I only recommend this method if you know where and what to shoot for, but it works really good.

Mac, I think your idea of drilling behind the license plate is excellent, cause:
1. Drill a hole big enough, and use a 1" rubber plug to re-seal.
2. Ya always gotta run a plate... it will always cover it.
3. You will always have a reasonable, direct resourse to get into the trunk, and one most undesireables would never think of.
The light housing isn't bad either, but does not sound as easy to use.

Open up your engine cover and look around the cooling fluid bottle. You'll find a backup trunk release located behind it. It's just a plastic loop with a wire attached to it. If you want to use your trunk without it locking on you, I recommend unbolting the lock till you get a replacement cable.

There are only a couple of ways I know to get into the rear trunk when both cables are popped. Unfortunately, both ways are destructive, and you'll need a drill & a long screwdriver.
The good news is that the damage you do will not be visible...
One way is to take the plastic lenses off of the right rear taillight assembly, exposing the chromed plastic housing. Drill a hole through the left-hand wall of the reverse light chamber, just about exactly in the center of the chamber wall. The goal is to drill a hole here that you can stick a long screwdriver through. You would insert the screwdriver through the hole, and get the tip straight to the latch assembly (which is located directly behind where the license plate mounts to the car. On the bottom of the latch is a lever where the cable connects. You would have to hit that lever with the screwdriver and push it toward the left side of the car. That would pop the trunklid open...
The other choice that I am aware of would be instead to remove the rear license plate, and drill a hole exactly in the middle of where it was mounted to the car. Then you would poke the screwdriver straight through that hole, and the lever would be directly in front of it. So you would pry the lever to the left, and that would pop the trunklid open.
I am sure there are probably other ways too, but I don't personally know of any that are non-destructive methods. This is a good reason for all of us to check that emergency cable and make sure it is not in bad shape!
Anyway, good luck with it. It's not as difficult as it sounds. Although the hole behind the license plate makes for a straight shot at the latch's lever, I personally prefer the hole in the right rear tail light housing, because you're not drilling metal for one, and for two, when done you can just fill the hole in the plastic with some clear silicone sealant and be done with it. Fixing the hole through the metal is not as simple.

Remove the liscence plate and use the top left hole to put a coat hanger wire through. If you can find anything thinner use it. Catch the release for the lock and it will pop open. I only recommend this method if you know where and what to shoot for, but it works really good.

Mac, I think your idea of drilling behind the license plate is excellent, cause:
1. Drill a hole big enough, and use a 1" rubber plug to re-seal.
2. Ya always gotta run a plate... it will always cover it.
3. You will always have a reasonable, direct resourse to get into the trunk, and one most undesireables would never think of.
The light housing isn't bad either, but does not sound as easy to use.
