I don't have a definite source, but I would call Canada dan. Do you have his number?

You could also check the Bayless catalog, they are pretty good for small parts that other vendors don't bother with.

The easiest may be to go to a local starter and alternator rebuilder and have them match the brushes.

I am going to a couple of rebuild shops at lunch. If I find another part number I'll let you know what it is. Stu
P.S. the alternators between a 77 and 78 are different. Does anybody know why? For example the 77 has 3 wires off the alt- no external condensor and a different connector.
The 78 has the external condensor attached to the +ve (main power lead) and then 3 wires that come off the brushes where the 77 has one. The internal wiring also seems to be different. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Since your 1300 alternator is in need of work, why not just take the opportunity to get a better unit anyway?

I got an alternator from a 1500cc X1/9 and put it on my '75. What a difference! Not only do the laters have a higher current output, but the voltage regulator for the later one is mounted directly to the back of the alternator, and the brushes are PART of the voltage regulator!

It's really a much more effective setup in my opinion. If the voltage regulator is mounted to the alternator as is the later versions, it eliminates extra wiring for the remote regulator. Also, if the brushes go bad, all you do is replace the voltage regulator and you get new brushes as part of the bargain.

I won't ever go back to the old alt. Maybe if I was in a highly competetive Concours car show or something - where it would be specifically examined - but for the street I am a strong supporter of this mod. It's easy too.

You mention one of your cars has less wiring involved? Is it possible that someone has already done this mod to the car with less wiring? What does that alternator look like? Is it a Bosch? -Mac.

The only problem with my alt. was that the brushes were worn down to little nubs. Total cost to fix $3:00. Since I'm going to put it away as soon as we get snow I didn't want to spend any money on it until the "great fixup" this winter.
I'm not sure why the wiring is different. The 77 has the positive wire (main) A wire to the terminal beside the positive (what is this) and then the connection to the brushes with one thick wire.
My 78 has the positive wire and what I think is a condensor attached to the same connection, a terminal beside the positive and the brush holder has 4 connection wires. One from somewhere inside the alt. and three that I assume go to the voltage reg. (Where is it hidden?). Both are identical other than that and are marelli. I'm not sure why the 77 has two thick wires and the 78 1 (the positive) but there must be a difference in the voltage regs??? Any ideas?
I plan on upgrading to a higher output alt. but I am not sure how the wiring would work and I hate the smell of burning insulation. When I do the change I will count on you guys for some advice on the connections. Tonight I'll put the old one back together and drive it for a couple of weeks more hopefully.
