kind of not about fiats but just asking for some help.
i just bought a '98 gti. it will not rev. around 4k it just slows down. it won't go any higher. it runs find at normal revs and drives fine in town and on the highway. Its not to important but i just want to figure it out.
I was thinking maybe the centrifugal advance in the distributor?
Any ideas?

I'd be surprised if a '98 GTi has centrifugal advance, should be all electronic by then.

I agree with Matthew, your first step should be to find if there are any fault codes.

Sounds to me like the car is in "limp home" mode due to some fault registered by the ECU.
 
Dittos for me also...

I would think this mill would be electronically controlled for most everything... and I have found that messing with late model VW's is something that usually can't be done outside of a dealership or a specialized shop.

Maybe its me... but even MY mechanic... when we both run outta ideas... take it and MY life savings to a specialist. Hope your experience is simpler and easier on both you and your wallet.
 
The 2.0 has a distributor but timing is electronically controlled. The VR6 has a distributorless wasted spark system. Either way the problem isn't likely timing. I'd be looking for unmetered air leaks, throttle body issues or MAF sensor problems but codes are going to need to be checked first.
 
its the 2.0. the gauge cluster is silver which i think is normal but insted of the usual redline of like 6100. its at around 6400. also the speedo goes up to 160. i don't know if this is differant with gtis or if this is a vr6 gauge cluster. The speedo also doesnt work right. it reads 20 under, exatly. the zero is kind of close to where 7 O'clock is.
 
I also have a '97 2.0 jetta 5 speed. should i try that ecu first? its dead simple to plug it in? did vw tune the 2.0 any differantly in the gti?

Don't mess with anything until you have checked for codes. Get the codes checked with a VW specific scanner like VCDS (aka Vag-Com). A generic scanner may not give you all the codes so try to avoid that if you can.
