I have both, a '78 and '82 X.
My question is on the '82 that I just got. It looks just like the black one in the pic. It has sat since '92 and I was able to get it started, but it will only run if the key is in the START position. It dies immediatly when I let off the key. What could this be? (it is not the switch itself, I hotwired it!)
I am also in need of a wheel like the one in the pic. Anyone got an extra?

One circuit is when you crank the engine (start position powers the first relay). The second relay powers the pump when the engine detects airflow through the AFM.
I have heard of either the combo going bad (or bad connections) or the AFM (lesser degree). A HUGE vacuum leak could also cause this.
You mentioned that it is 'hot wired'. You may not be connecting the wire in the pump circuit (very possible). There may be nothing actually wrong with your car!
To test if the AFM switch is working, remove the aifilter assembly, turn the key to 'run', and push the flap in the AFM and see if you hear the pump working.
I have a Fiat fuel injection diagnosis book that tells you step by step how to test each item. I will get Mac a copy soon so he can scan it for all to use.
My Scorpion uses a similar safety system with the fuel pump and the relays are well known for going bad. I have mine 'jumpered' past it so the pumps run anytime the key is in 'run'. I know that's not the 'correct' or the 'safest', but it works.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The fuel pump had a problem with the wireing but is now wired to the RUN position on the key. It is running in both the RUN and START positions. It seems as though the ignition loses power when in the RUN position.

I'm not sure where it is in the X, since mine came from a Beta, but I think it's right next to the ECU in the trunk. I'll look that one up tonight.
The combo relay is a Bosch part and the 'relays' are encapsulated within it, so I don't think any NAPA or other parts stores will have them stocked. It's listed in IAP and Bayless, but since it's not real cheap I'd verify that its bad before you replace it.
I will forward a copy of the fuel injection diagnosis manual to Mac this weekend and see if he can scan it for you. Hemay already have a copy (I'd be suprised if he didn't).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I'm not sure where it is in the X, since mine came from a Beta, but I think it's right next to the ECU in the trunk. I'll look that one up tonight.
The combo relay is a Bosch part and the 'relays' are encapsulated within it, so I don't think any NAPA or other parts stores will have them stocked. It's listed in IAP and Bayless, but since it's not real cheap I'd verify that its bad before you replace it.
I will forward a copy of the fuel injection diagnosis manual to Mac this weekend and see if he can scan it for you. Hemay already have a copy (I'd be suprised if he didn't).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
