i've been experiencing some wierdness with my
78 X.

it only seems to happen after 45 minutes or so
on the road
(i commute 70mi - 1.5hr).

this problem 1st showed up last year.
but after i rebuilt the carb and made a few
timing adjustments, it went away.

now it's happening again.

specifically, driving along at highway speeds
and power abruptly decreases,
like fuel was cut off, or ignition turned off.

lasts for only a second or so.

then gets progerssively worse.
then it doesn't cut out completely, but
just lack power.

in most cases, i can step down on the accellerator
and get the secondaries to boost me thru it
for a while,
which leads me to believe that it's NOT fuel
starvation...

if i pull over for a minute
it will start up and run fine for a while.

but will eventually start acting up again at more frequent intervals...

also, the engine temperature starts to climb
during this cycle.

whereas before the anomaly the temp was just about 190, after these shenanigens start, the temperature hovers well above the 190 mark
(but not above the fan cut-in temp).

don't know if this is cause or effect.
my guess is that it's running too lean
causing the temp rise...

it is probably no coincenence that the weather has been warmer, lately.

so there does seem to be a temp effect...

anyone have similar experiences?

what should i pinpoint when working on the carb
or distributer?

thanks in advance,

bob.d.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Is your car using the mechanical fuel pump?

My '75 X once did something with similar symptoms for a period of time. I first pulled all the jets & emulsion tubes, examined them and blew threw them with compressed air. Put them back in & changed the fuel filter (cheap insurance). It still did it.

To make a long story short, I checked a lot of other things that turned out to not be it, and eventually it turned out to be the mechanical fuel pump. It was old and could just not deliver quite the way it used to.

I replaced it & the problem vanished. Not saying this is your problem, but if you have checked all the other things and get stumped, it is possible -Mac.

i replaced the fuel pump, too
(that's another story:

the old pump was leaking from one of the
brass inlets.

i tapped it down with a hammer and it stopped
the leak.

only problem is that i musta tapped it down too far, 'cause it eventually caused a hole in the
internal bladder.

this allowed several quarts of gas to mix
in my sump....)

i installed a 'lectric fuel pump for a temporary fix, but was never quite comfortable with
the heat in the engine bay.

so i bought a new mech fuel pump...

i could try the 'lectric for a while, again.

thanks for the tip...

is there one to be suspicious of?

i got it from international auto parts,
and they're usually pretty good about these things....

btw: three more 70mi trips without incident
with the electric pump...

however, it may be my imagination, but i notice
a slight lack of power with the electric pump.

(yes, i know that it doesn't help to have bboth
pumps in series)

but i distictly remember a little boost when i put in the mechanical pump for the 1st time...

i could also do without the noise of the electric.

it is an original equipment electric pump from
a 76 spider.

at least it is quieter than those aftermarket
little bangers...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->hi guys,

thanks once again for the advice.

thought i'd share my findings over the holiday weekend.

1st thing i did was to pull and clean the carb.
interestingly enough, there wasn't much (if any) rust in the bowl as i thought. there was some discoloration at the bottom of the bowl, that thru 1/2" of fuel, looked like a pile of "sand".
(i have had this pink stuff in all of my spiders
and had always thought it was some kind of precipitate from fuel additives, etc.
and it never seemed to cause problems...)

the carb cleaned, i re-adjusted the float to spec.

next thing, i pulled the mechanical fuel pump
to check the protrusion of the push-rod.
haynes manual suggests 0.59 to 0.61 inch, but it was clearly over 0.75 in.

thought this might explain the problem.
figure the "throw" of the pump might be offset
causing low pressure.

haynes states that "damage could result".

so i made a thicker gasket to get the protrusion down a bit. put that in and it leaked. !

several attempts to re-position/tighten
only helped temporarily. yesterday on my way back to work it began to leak again.

pulling the pump this time, i also removed the
bakelite spacer - which came off IN TWO PIECES.

played the chicken-or-the-egg" game in my head:
did it leak cause it was cracked, or did i crack it trying to tighten....

in the end it didn't matter. i needed to get to work. so i made an impromptu block-off plate
out of stainless sheet (using a hand nibbler -
my blisters have blisters).

resorted to old-school cork gasket and indian-head goop (cause i know it will work).

hooked up the electric pump again.
(will look into a better unit soon)
and it is on the stock-style rubber isolator.

i suppose i oughta rig up an oil-pressure cut-off relay.

but an INTERESTING finding was within the mechanical fuel pump. i found one spring in the bottom cavity below the lever mechanism. another
was wedged sideways behind the lever.
so the spring was compressing sideways instead of
axially... !!!

amazing the thing still worked at all...

another chicken-or-egg scenario:
did i bust it because of the excessive protrusion of the push-rod (as haynes suggested)
or what?

but screw it.
the electric pump works well enough.
i hope the block-off plate don't leak...

i did have one minor episode on the way in.
power seemed to cut out once. this time
flooring the accelerator did not help.

it didn't re-occur, and i'm thinking the
electrical connection is a little loose.

will check before the ride home tonite...

take care,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I've just helped a very nice lady X owner out with a similar problem. She'd had her car for just two months and pretty much all of that time had been spent in a workshop. When she finally got the car back for any length of time, she discovered that the engine power would drop intermittently without any obvious pattern. After getting the garage to check though the alternator and the carburettor she was getting a little annoyed (to say the least) - last week it died completely. The recovery guy got the car going again by hitting the electric fuel pump HARD.

It turns out that the pump was on it's last legs and was pumping at a much lower pressure than needed. We managed to get a replacement pump from a local performance spares shop (it's handy having one just around the corner - and they second hand stuff too which is great for trying ideas out without having to pay up big money just for an experiment) which solved the entire problem. The car runs much better now, but the idle is out due to the suddenly richer fuel mixture.

The pump used was a Facet Silver top which are usually ultra-reliable, but this one had been fitted WITHOUT a fuel-filter causing the internals to be pretty much shredded by the crap coming out of the tank! Normally it is possible to obtain a service kit that would allow the pump to be cleaned and brought back to life - but the damage was so severe that the pump had to be thrown away (a shame as they aren't all that cheap!)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Bob,

next time when it gets really bad, bad pull over and take out the primary main jet. Blow it through and reinstall. If the car runs like new, you have found your problem.

You would then install a good fuel filter and hope for the best. Since there may still be rust in the carb, you may have to clean it out. If the rust problem is bad, you will still get fine rust particles going through the filter that may or may not get clogged in the jet. If they do, you may have to pull the tank and treat it. As a temporary measure you could buy a super-duper fuel filter that filters very fine particles. You could check the Summit Racing catalog , they go for $15 and up.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->hi ulix.

thanks for the hint.

i have had the carb apart a couple times.

there wasn't much contamination,
other than the usual "sand" in the bottom
of the bowl.

i've had this on all my cars...
mostly spiders, though

i suppose it doesn't take much to clog
those tiny jets, though.

i'll look into a better filter
(just a fram jobbie in there now).

only problem with diagnosing this problem
is that it is fine once you shut the engine
off for a while.

so the 1st time i could correlate the anomaly
to just about anything i did
(until it happened again !!!).

thanks again!

ps: do you know a woman named jafee.
i've worked with her father, gil.

he's mentioned your name once or twice...

i work for lockheed over here on the east coast
and i get out to sillycon valley from time to time

If you don't want to remove the carb, you could try sucking it out with a syringe, then blow everything out with carb cleaner. I wouldn't run it before you install a super fine filter.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I also had this, only in warm weather.

After a lot of searching and jet-cleaning I found out that the carb gasket was bad (probably as a result of taking off the carb 100 times to check it once again). It also happened with another carb!!

But is was not that bad that the car ran bad, only when really warmed-up (distortion of the surfaces by heat?). So I scraped off all the gasket material (both sides!) and cut my own from gasket paper.

It worked.

Second, they sell a sort of stuff in a can "carb cleaner without disassembly". You run the car on the stuff for a few minutes and the carb is "clean". My local garage recommends it for all DMTR/DATR type carbs from experience. It has worked for me... your mileage may vary

Hope this helps

Felix

and try her again.

the electric fuel pump seems to have fixed the problem, though.

i will also check the "throw" on the mechanical
pump.

it is written that the mechanical fuel pump should come with a selection of gaskets
meant to act as "shims" to adjust the protrusion of the push-rod into the pump body.

if it is too much it may damage the pump.
if it is too little low output will result
(ding, ding, ding...)

i'll check that...

maybe have to shave the mounting block a little.

or just get a nice quiet electric pump
(and find a nice cool place to mount it...)

thanks a lot guys!
