finally got my new hood release cable in. I have never had a working release, so I am not sure how to set it up. Does the lever in the car normally rest in a horizontal position and you press it down to release the hood, or does the lever rest vertical where you pull it up towards the dash to release it. Need to know before I start trimmin cable...also, the little bushing that slides in the cable stay on the actual release unit itself is a little too big on the new unit I got from Vick...any suggestions on making the opening bigger or the brass fitting smaller in diameter so it slides in? (no innuendos intended there!) BTW, is there actually a way to get that entire catch mechanism out from its place of rest between the front compartment and the firewall, or have I exhusted my expletive vocabulary for a worthwhile cause!!!!

thanks guys -

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->If I remeber, you are right with the later; the lever should be near vertical with hood closed and pull it towards the dash to open it.

After driving about for a few weeks with a broken cable, I ordered a new cable but it was a absolute pain to fit. The main problem I had was that the end of the old cable in the catch had been bent over and therefore I couldnt pull the old cable out from the interior. After a lot of swearing and about four hours of fiddling about, I ended up fitting the new cable using the old outer.

You might be lucky in that my later (`89) car has a different catch mechanism (bigger) than the earlier cars which cannot be pulled out of the cutout.

Setting up the tension on the cable is a bit difficult too, I ended up setting it as tight as possible, to stop the possibility of the cable slipping off the small plastic rotor on the lever.
You will need to bend the angle of the cable just right here to keep the brass fitting from falling off. I thought that setting this cable so tight might cause it to snap again but 6 months later it is still ok (the cable felt as though it intially stretched but was ok after that).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I cannot get the thing to work - I actually even got the lock mechanism out of the firewall to make the cable fit and get it tight. After much #%@$ I got it back in place and got the cable attached to the pull lever...you are right, I think it does "rest" down, becuase when you shut the lid, the mechanism ideally should go down, which pushes the cable towards the driver side and then pulling the lever up would in turn push the cable and release towards the passenger side which sould spring the lock...I cannot get this to happen at all. The hood will not close down all the way first of all, and then the cable doesn't seem to do much of anything when I move the lever. I have not crimped the loop around the release lever yet because I think it still needs adjustment at both ends - what do you think? <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->For the hood not closing all the way down, the clip on the hood is probably resting on the top of the sprung latch mechanism.

How I did it;
At the lever end; I correctly hooped the cable round the rotor, with the the part of the cable that exits to the hood at the *top*, and slipping the little brass fitting over this and the end of the cable. The end of the cable was bent into a "V" shape to stop the fitting falling off.
At the lever end I made sure to get as much of the cable as possible through to the hood. By setting the lever to the horizontal position, this helped further.

At the catch mechanism side; Make sure it is fitted tightly back on the firewall, inside the catch (if its anything like mine) you will see a small screw in a block, much like an electrical terminal block or "schotch block" as the call round these parts! Push the cable through here and tighten. Because there should already be tension in the cable, from setting the lever to the horizontal, it will actually make the lever too tight to operate, (afterall you dont want to snap that new cable!) and I had to back mine off a bit - a fiddly job as you will need to adjust the position of the cable with pliers and tighten up the screw at the same time - let alone be able to fit both the tools in the panel hole at the same time.
Ive just again looked up the Haynes manual and the catch pictured is totally different from mine, so these later instructions may not apply.

P.S. the biggest problem I had was getting the old cable out, So you`re at least half-way there now.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I welded a plate into the cowl and drilled a hole in the hood to add hood pins (courtesy of my local speed shop). No, it isn't proper equipment, but it works well, and looks snazzy.
