I can see the starter from the top, but it's pretty well blocked by numerous parts. It's hard to tell, but it looks like something might also be blocking it below. I haven't got it up on jackstands yet until I get the replacement starter. (it a bit of work to get it up high enough for me to get under it, so I'm trying to only do it once).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

They are on the back side of the bellhousing (driver's side) at the point closest to the forward bulkhead. The three 13mm bolts can be seen through the left rear wheel well if you look closely.
Below the starter is the cross member. You can drop the starter out the bottom between the oil filter and the cross member. Once you are under the car, you can look up and see the bottom of the starter. The cross member really isn't in the way.
Take the electrical connections loose from above. Be sure to disconnect the battery first.

This uncovered a hole most of the way into the hose, dug out by one of screws on the back of the starter case. Ugh. Well, if I'm going to make an order to Vicks for starter/hoses I might as well replace the leaking overflow tank. Ok, the hoses and tank are to arrive thursday but they're out of starters. Great. Off it goes to the local auto electric guru to be "fixed by thursday if the parts are available". Another ugh. What the hell, might as well buy that K&N Mac recommended. Special order? You can have it by thursday? (visions of Tweek on South Park - "ack! too much pressure!")
Now I've got a disabled X, a mess of parts arriving no earlier than thursday, and Mac's party is on saturday! Ack!
