My 81 FI X seems to have some sort of fuel injection problem that i cannot seem to sort out. Case in point: Today was a perfectly sunny day, the X runs perfectly. Once the rain starts(and presumably the cold), the car starts to mutter a different tune. I try to start the car as usual - no luck. Then after a bit of prodding with god's pedal, she starts. No big deal so far.

The problem is that once on the road, the car exibits an nasty trait - it seems not to want to rev. By this I mean that with the pedal to the floor in any gear, the car turns in almost a lumpy fashion, and can't seem to be compelled to rev past 6000. Strangely, the car seems to respond well at throttle tip in, but anything more that that seems to almost flood the car.

My haynes sense wants to charge the injectors as the likely culprits, but i guess i wanted another opinion or seven. When i mentioned this problem to Ulix, he noted that the 5th injectors might be responsible. The odd thing about this however is that at the end of my trip tonight the temp on the car was right in the money range, and it was still hesitating. Any ideas would be appreciated, as my "turbo lag" explination is beginning to wear a bit thin...

I have had experience with other cars that exhibited similar symptoms on rainy or really cool and humid days (and in the Kansas City area we get more than a few of them). What it turned out to be was the ignition system. All of this was before I was really car literate, but I remember something about a distributor cap being cracked or something. I'm not saying your injection isn't the problem, but checking the ignition will either rule out things or lead you to the problem. Good luck.

You may not see moisture inside either, last time this happened to me, (on my nissan) I only spotted it because it was getting dark and I could see the small sparks at the distributor

If it were leaking, that might cause some symptoms like really rich running & very hard starting when hot. Do you see any excess smoke or vapor (ie: unspent fuel) coming out of the exhaust or engine bay when this problem is happening?

Alternately, if it were failing to deliver any fuel, that might make starting a little rough when the engine is completely cold, but I hesitate to believe it could be responsible for some of the symptoms you describe - hmmmn...

You might also wish to check your timing, as well as pull the spark plugs & have a good look at them. Plugs can tell many things about what is happening inside the cylinders. I would shy away from pulling the fuel injectors until I had some more research on the symptoms & other (more simple) possible causes.

I don't know what to say about the rain thing. Is it possible that the weather conditions are just a coincidence to the symptoms, or do you really have the feeling that the rainy conditions have something to do with it? Does your alternator belt ever slip? Not that that would cause any of this, I was just curious -Mac.

The symptoms that you are describing are familiar to me.

This happens after a heavy rain and also specially after you wash the engine.
The engine idles just fine and you can keep it running with just a touch on the gas, but as soon as you opened the throttle, the engine starts to backfiring and jerking very heavily until you release the gas pedal.

The first time I thought I had fried the ECU (behind the spare tire). Afterwards
I had found water in the ECU connector!

What happens here is that the ECU connector is lower in height than the rest of the wiring harness on the engine compartment.

Therefore every time you have water in the engine compartment the water slides down on the harness and ends up on the ECU connector causing the symptoms described above.

What I do here is to dry the connector with a “Q tip“ first then finish drying it with a hair blower. And also every time I wash the engine I try not to get water directly on the harness that is against the firewall.

Gilles is on the right track. When any water gets on the FI harness it can run down to the computer in your spare tire compartment. This can occur in rain and could also occur after you wash your engine. Unplug the big connector off the computer and you'll have an answer instantly.

Another possibility is that it could be ignition related. If moisture is getting into your distributor cap, it would exhibit the same symptoms.

Here's my recommendations: First pull the computer connector and make sure it's dry and there are no signs of corrosion indicating that it's been getting wet. Then wash your car (outside only, being sure that plenty of water falls on the engine cover) and re-check computer connection for moisture. If it's still dry, hose down your engine and then check for moisture.

If it's still dry, then the next time it happens, immediately pop the distributor cap and see if it's wet or damp inside. If so, you've found your answer.
