any of you have the electrical schematic for
the external marelli solid-state voltage regulator
used on early X1/9's.

i am looking for the internal workings,
but an overall diagram would also be helpful.

in my quest for a new alternator for my 78
x1/9 i could not find a late-model bosch
unit for a car WITHOUT AC - that came with a
pulley.

i wound up ordering what was supposed to be
the proper unit for a 78 from PEP BOYS.

it was markedly different from the unit
i had in there.

no pulley, no heat shield (couldn't even use the one i had because of 4 bolts insteda of 3).

the electrical connections are way different, too.

there's a power out, field winding, and another
that appears to be to work a charge indicator relay, instead of a D+ output.

i wound up having to make my own regulator from scratch (you don't have to be an EE, but it helps).

it functions, but i believe i'm running it too
hot.

before i left on a business trip, the alternator belt was shrieking on acceleration.

disconnecting the B+ connection made it go away.

i believe i was overcharging the battery
so excessive field current, hence output current,
must be loading it down.

or maybe heating it up. or causing too high
of a magnetic field (will it cause axial
strain on the bearings).
so i hope i haven't hurt the bearings...

how about those iksra alternators for YUGO.

do they fit in an X???

it sounds like you enjoy this kind of stuff, but what I would do is return the alternator to Pep Boys since it isn't the right one. Then buy the right one from a Fiat parts vendor or have your old one rebuilt.

Also, IAP sells solid state regulators for Marelli alternators and also for the early Bosch units (not in their catalog).

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->ulix hit the nail on the head:
i DO enjoy this kind of stuff.
..what is that saying about needing a ladder
so i built a ferris-wheel...

i most certainly intend to bring the alternator back. i was just looking for a way to drive the car until i get the proper unit.

i spent some time trying to find a late-model
bosch. and i even ordered one from (i won't
say who), but they sent me an A/C version,
without a pulley. on all counts, no good for me.

the pep-boys option was to be a quick-fix.

the problem was that i didn't know what
i had got. it was shorter than the stock unit,
and looked more like a early-spider alternator
than an x1/9 version.

the "third" electrical connection is apparently
NOT a D+ connection. it looks like it is a "relay-control" output for the charge-light.

(i know older spiders used this type of circuit,
but i didn't know X1/9's did. maybe '74???)

so i wound up pulling an old mechanical voltage regulator from a "sleeping" spider.

this type takes B+ from the ignition switch.
since i've been striving to reduce the current
thru my ignition switch, i had to rig up an "ignition" source via a relay.

it worked, but not very well.
the voltage ran fairly high, and the battery was definitely overcharged after a week of
highway driving like this.

i built one circuit which performed the same
(simplistic) switching function in the mechanical
regulator, but gave me the option to tweak
the voltage thresholds.

and another that did a more advanced PWM control.

but the system is still flaky.

at night i noticed arcing-sparking inside the alternator. this occurs with all three voltage regulators, and even with the field winding disconnected...

this *can't* be normal.

the belt (bearing?) squeal also stops when field or B+ wired are disconnected.

the quest for the regulator schematic is one of curiosity, at this point.
and, barring a bum alternator to begin with,
i feel like i should be able to make-this-work, after the time i've already invested...

once i've picked up the gauntlet, it's tough to toss it aside...

i achieved the same result by installing

i also had to play with series resistances

this was a rebuilt unit.

it may have been arcing from day one...
