I now have 4 Xs and NOT 1 of them stays operational long enough for me to enjoy them.
My '87 low milage (18000) X ran for three weeks after I had it shipped in from Montana. That was last summer. It turns over just fine, everything else checks out. It just won't start. Ever.
My $275 '86 ran well after a clutch replacement. It too then exhibited the EXACT SAME lack of starting as the '87..... for about 6 months. One day 6 weeks ago, it started and ran well everyday. Yesterday morning I started it as it was parked. I didn't move it, didn't even get into it and shut it down after a couple of minutes. Someone came over to see my cars and when I turned the key... no start! Turns over, has gas.... not a thing different from when it started 4 hours before!?!?!
My '78, with the newly transplanted 1600 engine/big head/dual carbs etc runs fine... except the seatbelt won't pull out. So replace it.. OK, here in Southern California no problem... except another of the inoperable Xs is in the garage and we had 5 weeks of rain!
Don't even get me started on how my first purchased X, a '79, no longer starts even though it too ran fine for the first few weeks after I bought it.
I am moments away from piling them all on the driveway and having a huge bonfire. Anyone interested in a package deal?

As to the late models: all any car needs is compression, cam timing, fuel in the correct quantity, and spark at the correct time. It's not going to be any big mystery. It's actually GOOD that they don't run. This will make it easy to figure out what's wrong. I would check for spark first. (good spark at the plugs). If spark is good, put a timing light on it and see that it happens at 10 degrees BTDC. While you're at it, roll the motor over and make sure the cam timing is correct. Next, when you took the plugs out, were they dry or wet? If dry then you have a fuel problem. Either no fuel pressure, or no injector pulse. If they are soaking wet, then you have either too much fuel pressure(bad regulator) or for some reason the ECU is holding the injectors open too long.(water in ECU connector, poor connection at coolant temp sensor, or worse). Before we get too deep in it, check the easy stuff to be sure, and let us know what you find. It's all fixable,

It's not the huge one from the battery, but the lil one. I finally had to wiggle it a bit before starting the car. I later replaced it and had no problem. My 87 did that to me once or twice last summer.
#2. Check the wires on the coil. There was one that would loosen up on me too. The car would turn over and everything, but no go on starting.
Hang in there, the alternative is no better.

This morning, it fired right up! Now bear in mind I did nothing to the car since it last started, didn't even move it. It started on Sat morning, refused to start several times Sat afternoon and all day Sunday. It turned over, but no catch. Monday it starts like it never had a problem. Maybe the car was scared I would burn it? Who knows.

When it didn't run, you had the chance to find out why.
Now that it runs, the problem could have been just about anything, and you can bet it will be back!! You are now reduced to checking for possible questionable connections, etc... you won't know for sure what's wrong untill it acts up again...
Next time it's not working, take the opportunity to find out what it's lacking; spark, fuel pressure, or injector pulse.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->If it's running, try wiggling some wires around the FI, fuel pump, and ignition module (watch out for the high voltage stuff though!). Here's what I've usually found on the electrical failures:
1) the grounding rings (circular things mounted to the body with several quick disconnect (QD) fastening points) have rusted and caused an intermittant ground.
2) the QDs themselves have lost their holding power with age or actually cracked. One of my fuel pump leads was just resting on the connection but worked fine until I changed the overflow tank and soaked it with coolant!
3) the fuse holders fatique and don't hold the fuses tight. They need to be sanded to shine them up where the fuses contact then be bent inward so they'll hold the fuse tighter.
4) some high-current connectors corrode then start to burn up. Specifically, the one under the steering column from the keyswitch and the one on the inner side of the fuse panel where the brown wire from the battery goes.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Maybe not done quite as bad as Fiat, but I do recall many of the same issues on my VW. Those euro fuses are just plain stupid, and they don't seem to waste a strand of extra wire overrating any circuit on euro cars. The earlier US glass fuses were much better, and I think the new blade ones are the best of the lot.

My '87 low milage (18000) X ran for three weeks after I had it shipped in from Montana. That was last summer. It turns over just fine, everything else checks out. It just won't start. Ever.
My $275 '86 ran well after a clutch replacement. It too then exhibited the EXACT SAME lack of starting as the '87..... for about 6 months. One day 6 weeks ago, it started and ran well everyday. Yesterday morning I started it as it was parked. I didn't move it, didn't even get into it and shut it down after a couple of minutes. Someone came over to see my cars and when I turned the key... no start! Turns over, has gas.... not a thing different from when it started 4 hours before!?!?!
My '78, with the newly transplanted 1600 engine/big head/dual carbs etc runs fine... except the seatbelt won't pull out. So replace it.. OK, here in Southern California no problem... except another of the inoperable Xs is in the garage and we had 5 weeks of rain!
Don't even get me started on how my first purchased X, a '79, no longer starts even though it too ran fine for the first few weeks after I bought it.
I am moments away from piling them all on the driveway and having a huge bonfire. Anyone interested in a package deal?

As to the late models: all any car needs is compression, cam timing, fuel in the correct quantity, and spark at the correct time. It's not going to be any big mystery. It's actually GOOD that they don't run. This will make it easy to figure out what's wrong. I would check for spark first. (good spark at the plugs). If spark is good, put a timing light on it and see that it happens at 10 degrees BTDC. While you're at it, roll the motor over and make sure the cam timing is correct. Next, when you took the plugs out, were they dry or wet? If dry then you have a fuel problem. Either no fuel pressure, or no injector pulse. If they are soaking wet, then you have either too much fuel pressure(bad regulator) or for some reason the ECU is holding the injectors open too long.(water in ECU connector, poor connection at coolant temp sensor, or worse). Before we get too deep in it, check the easy stuff to be sure, and let us know what you find. It's all fixable,

It's not the huge one from the battery, but the lil one. I finally had to wiggle it a bit before starting the car. I later replaced it and had no problem. My 87 did that to me once or twice last summer.
#2. Check the wires on the coil. There was one that would loosen up on me too. The car would turn over and everything, but no go on starting.
Hang in there, the alternative is no better.

When it didn't run, you had the chance to find out why.
Now that it runs, the problem could have been just about anything, and you can bet it will be back!! You are now reduced to checking for possible questionable connections, etc... you won't know for sure what's wrong untill it acts up again...
Next time it's not working, take the opportunity to find out what it's lacking; spark, fuel pressure, or injector pulse.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->If it's running, try wiggling some wires around the FI, fuel pump, and ignition module (watch out for the high voltage stuff though!). Here's what I've usually found on the electrical failures:
1) the grounding rings (circular things mounted to the body with several quick disconnect (QD) fastening points) have rusted and caused an intermittant ground.
2) the QDs themselves have lost their holding power with age or actually cracked. One of my fuel pump leads was just resting on the connection but worked fine until I changed the overflow tank and soaked it with coolant!
3) the fuse holders fatique and don't hold the fuses tight. They need to be sanded to shine them up where the fuses contact then be bent inward so they'll hold the fuse tighter.
4) some high-current connectors corrode then start to burn up. Specifically, the one under the steering column from the keyswitch and the one on the inner side of the fuse panel where the brown wire from the battery goes.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

New plugs,wires,cap,rotor,check the anti run on cylinoid( at the back of the carb on the Xés that have carbs.)and go over ALL of the ignition wireing. This should narrow down the problems. Then last check fuel for pressure or piholes in the fuel line.

Maybe not done quite as bad as Fiat, but I do recall many of the same issues on my VW. Those euro fuses are just plain stupid, and they don't seem to waste a strand of extra wire overrating any circuit on euro cars. The earlier US glass fuses were much better, and I think the new blade ones are the best of the lot.
Did you have a look at the suggestions in my earlier posting? You have a bad connection, and it's a good failure. All dead is easy to find, it's those random "only while driving" intermittants that suck!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
