Went out to go to work, and no first or third. It is the stock 4spd, 1978 with 115k miles. There was no grinding, stiff gears, popping out, etc... just no first or third. Any idea why? I noticed the shift rod coming out of the body was bent, but it had been that way for the 4 years I have driven the car. I have straightened it, and adjusted the linkage, but still no third (and now an intermitant first). I'm starting to think it is internal.

Any ideas are wecome. Thanks... MAtt
 
A sudden loss of 1st and 3rd is almost always an external linkage problem. Try adjusting the shifter position further back and check the motor mounts.
