In 79 (first year of 5 speed production), they made a tolerancing error and the reverse gear only engages about 1/4 of the way. Sorry about 5-speed 101 not being available in the Library section of the site yet, we are still waiting for Steve H to finish editing the texts. What with his autocrossing exploits and the tranny shop, he's really a busy man. He'll get to it & I don't want to rush him. In the meantime, the rough texts originally written are in the archives of this forum, the FAQ explains how to use & search the archives...
As for your tranny, I am pretty sure by the sound of it you will have to pull it & crack it open. When I did the 5-speed in my '80 (the job from which 5s101 sprang forth) we also did a sort of a vendor comparison on parts, prices and helpful services. We did not poll all vendors, just a handful of the more well-known places. For 5s101 we eventually ordered half the parts for the project from C. Obert & Co. in Santa Cruz, Ca., and the other half from Vick Autosport in Texas. Both vendors (and many more of all varieties) are listed on the Linkpage of the SeattleX1/9 site.
About the 5s101 Library section: as soon as I get the time, I am going to dig through the forum archives myself, and make one page of links to each archived 5s101 section, and post that in the Library, in the mean time, so that at least it will all be accessible from one place

Interior needs cleanup, body and finish are extremely straight but the running gear is gonna require some tweaking. Figure tackle the hard stuff first. In 79 (first year of 5 speed production), they made a tolerancing error and the reverse gear only engages about 1/4 of the way. When you replace it with new, get the updated reverse shift rail as well. It's improved! (reverse engages almost 1/2 way

Sorry about 5-speed 101 not being available in the Library section of the site yet, we are still waiting for Steve H to finish editing the texts. What with his autocrossing exploits and the tranny shop, he's really a busy man. He'll get to it & I don't want to rush him. In the meantime, the rough texts originally written are in the archives of this forum, the FAQ explains how to use & search the archives...
As for your tranny, I am pretty sure by the sound of it you will have to pull it & crack it open. When I did the 5-speed in my '80 (the job from which 5s101 sprang forth) we also did a sort of a vendor comparison on parts, prices and helpful services. We did not poll all vendors, just a handful of the more well-known places. For 5s101 we eventually ordered half the parts for the project from C. Obert & Co. in Santa Cruz, Ca., and the other half from Vick Autosport in Texas. Both vendors (and many more of all varieties) are listed on the Linkpage of the SeattleX1/9 site.
About the 5s101 Library section: as soon as I get the time, I am going to dig through the forum archives myself, and make one page of links to each archived 5s101 section, and post that in the Library, in the mean time, so that at least it will all be accessible from one place
