There are cheap aftermarket pumps out there that have "lifetime" warranties and hook up easily. I've used them to repair cheap friends' cars and haven't had problems with them, but again they are not original. They are available at the biggest chain stores though.
Also, a Bosch FI pump is much the same as, well, a Bosch FI pump. Does the X1/9 have the same L-Jetronic FI as other Fiats? Then it's the same as L-Jetronic VW's and others, including 1986 Ford LTD's w/3.8 liter V6 engines, ask for the external pump, not the in-tank transfer pump. It costs a lot less than the exact same pump for the Fiat. Or you can just ask for Masterbrand model#E2000 from those who carry them.
You may find that for what it costs for a new one, it's worth it to just replace it than rebuild it. And this is coming from a serious DIYer who tries to rebuild fuel gauge senders! <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The cost of the stock pump is quite high and almost sinful. I found a new one for $130.00, which still seems high, but alot cheaper than Vick or Bayless.
I'm going to investigate your suggestion about an aftermarket pump...but I'd really like to keep the car as original as possible.
