The mechanic put 10W-40 instead of the normal 15-40 we run in it at the last oil change. The oil pressure is down somewhat from the norm. As it is consumed by the engine, is it ok to replensih the oil pan with 20-50 to get the pressure back up, or is this still not recommended (I know I have been told in the past not to mix viscosity).
We will definitely go back to 15-40 at the next change, but until then, should I mix?

The car may mean nothing to North Americans but with 340hp from 2L it is cheap insurance for an expensive engine and with 70K on the clock, I would be willing to bet that an engine strip-down would reveal no discernable wear.

I am also prone to a quart of Duralube from Walmart for 12 bucks every now and then as this HOT climate dictates it. I found it decreased my operating temp by 17 degrees. (Some folks on the this site have claimed the same for some synthetic oils...)
As I only have an idiot light, I know not the pressure, but the engine just seems to run better and QUIETER throughout the RPM range with a fresh change.
As for MIXING multi-viscosities... what is the harm it could do? As for mixing HD and non-detergents... what harm could it do? I don't generally do it... but have been known to add a quart of "whatever" when it was needed... over the last 40 years. If it has caused some harm... I don't know what it was or is?
I can imagine that mixing synthetics and non-synthetics might be a problem... ANYONE KNOW???

My understanding is that in high mileage engines that have never had synthetic oil, there is no benefit to adding synthetic oil, as the bores have already been "seasoned" with natural oil.
FWIW (and this doesn't apply to the X), synthetic oil should never be used in any motor that uses a magneto instead of a distributor (most old cars, and many motorcycles), as it has different conductivity, and can prevent the passage of electical current through sub-petrolated (is that a word or did I make it up - you be the judge) magneto systems.
As far as mixing oils, I've never read of a disadvantage to doing this, but I also know of no benefit. Since I use a different type of oil in each of my cars, sometimes I do have a little leftover stuff that gets mixed into whatever car gets a little low.
I've never used any of the teflon based oil additives - I don't see the advantage. If you are using a good oil filter, it will take all of the teflon out anyway (I use the K&N oil filters in the sizes that I can get them - unfortunately, not available for the X - I use a purolator pureone filter in that). I do use "restore" oil additive now and again... don't know if it works, but it gives me peace of mind

I am also prone to a quart of Duralube from Walmart for 12 bucks every now and then as this HOT climate dictates it. I found it decreased my operating temp by 17 degrees. (Some folks on the this site have claimed the same for some synthetic oils...)
As I only have an idiot light, I know not the pressure, but the engine just seems to run better and QUIETER throughout the RPM range with a fresh change.
As for MIXING multi-viscosities... what is the harm it could do? As for mixing HD and non-detergents... what harm could it do? I don't generally do it... but have been known to add a quart of "whatever" when it was needed... over the last 40 years. If it has caused some harm... I don't know what it was or is?
I can imagine that mixing synthetics and non-synthetics might be a problem... ANYONE KNOW???

My understanding is that in high mileage engines that have never had synthetic oil, there is no benefit to adding synthetic oil, as the bores have already been "seasoned" with natural oil.
FWIW (and this doesn't apply to the X), synthetic oil should never be used in any motor that uses a magneto instead of a distributor (most old cars, and many motorcycles), as it has different conductivity, and can prevent the passage of electical current through sub-petrolated (is that a word or did I make it up - you be the judge) magneto systems.
As far as mixing oils, I've never read of a disadvantage to doing this, but I also know of no benefit. Since I use a different type of oil in each of my cars, sometimes I do have a little leftover stuff that gets mixed into whatever car gets a little low.
I've never used any of the teflon based oil additives - I don't see the advantage. If you are using a good oil filter, it will take all of the teflon out anyway (I use the K&N oil filters in the sizes that I can get them - unfortunately, not available for the X - I use a purolator pureone filter in that). I do use "restore" oil additive now and again... don't know if it works, but it gives me peace of mind

They sell alot of it up here and I have used it in my vehicles. Try asking for it at your jobbers. They should know what it is and should have it. I will find out in which state it is made and let you know. Lucas Oil has a big old yanky flag on it. I still buy it anyway, LOL. You can put it into your tranny and it helps it work better and in your rear end, of your car of course, and it works better after it is added aswell.
