First, my speedoment cable in my 1986 is broken (yes, the big long cable). I have a spare car and therefore a spare cable. I just wanted to know if there was anything I should know before I replace this cable.
Next, my right hand side electric window does not go up or down (I didn't want electric windows, but there are only a few X1/9s in all of CT that I took what I got). When I press the up or down buttons, there is no change in the battery meter (much the opposite for the other window). I would assume that there is a wire loose somewhere. Any ideas where I should look first?
Both these problems should be easy to fix, I just don't want to wind up doing something stupid, because I love my X.

Most of the times when the window fails to operate it turns out to be a faulty switch, if you swap it with the drivers side you will be able to determine if has failed or not.

To change it without much effort, just pull the old cable out and keep the sleeve intact. Slide the new one through and in it's place. Has to go from the dash side first.
Warning: If the sleeve shows signs of rust and tears on the black cover, relace the whole unit.
Windows:
90% of the time it's a crappy Fiat switches if it isn't the fuse. Swich the left and right switch to make sure. If you end up opening the door panel up, make sure you lube the window mechanism up pretty good. My windows go up and down like pros since I did that.

With some much needed help from Kyle we replaced the assembly with a roll up assembly from Vicks. Pay close attention to the path of the cable... we messed one up by having it incorrect, and rendered the part useless (cable crimped up on us). Your door panels will have a perforated circle on it that you can punch out and it will align perfectly with the new window crank. Now if I can just figure out how to get rid of these window switches!

I got a couple of questions...
First, my speedoment cable in my 1986 is broken (yes, the big long cable). I have a spare car and therefore a spare cable. I just wanted to know if there was anything I should know before I replace this cable.
Next, my right hand side electric window does not go up or down (I didn't want electric windows, but there are only a few X1/9s in all of CT that I took what I got). When I press the up or down buttons, there is no change in the battery meter (much the opposite for the other window). I would assume that there is a wire loose somewhere. Any ideas where I should look first?
Both these problems should be easy to fix, I just don't want to wind up doing something stupid, because I love my X.

Most of the times when the window fails to operate it turns out to be a faulty switch, if you swap it with the drivers side you will be able to determine if has failed or not.

To change it without much effort, just pull the old cable out and keep the sleeve intact. Slide the new one through and in it's place. Has to go from the dash side first.
Warning: If the sleeve shows signs of rust and tears on the black cover, relace the whole unit.
Windows:
90% of the time it's a crappy Fiat switches if it isn't the fuse. Swich the left and right switch to make sure. If you end up opening the door panel up, make sure you lube the window mechanism up pretty good. My windows go up and down like pros since I did that.

With some much needed help from Kyle we replaced the assembly with a roll up assembly from Vicks. Pay close attention to the path of the cable... we messed one up by having it incorrect, and rendered the part useless (cable crimped up on us). Your door panels will have a perforated circle on it that you can punch out and it will align perfectly with the new window crank. Now if I can just figure out how to get rid of these window switches!

If you are right, that would solve a dilemma I have been having... where to relocate those switches to make room for an oil pressure gauge.

One of my pet projects is to make a kit that replaces the cable with and aftermarket sender and head to provide an electronic speedo, but the fun factor usually gets in the way before and projects like that get started.
