I have been working with an individual who specializes in modifing cars for extreme performance. We are building a 1500cc X engine for my '78 that should have more power than any X ever built. Here is a laundry list of things being built or purchased for this project:
Custom race pistons optimized for turbo
Heat treating (hardening) crank, rods, ect.
Modified intake maifold with oversized throttle body
Modified FI head with oversized intake/exhaust valves
Custom 62 pound injectors with racing fuel rail
Dual fuel pumps, second pump kicks on under boost
Electromotive Tech 2 distributorless ignition/FI computer (programmable while driving car)
Custom FI wiring harness
Baffled oil pan
Custom race clutch
Intercooler/fan assembly from a Porsche 930 turbo
Wastegate
Billet valve cover
I'm sure there are other parts that I'm forgetting....
A 6 speed transmission is planned, but we figure we will break the Bertone 5 speed trans first.
Power goal: 400hp at the wheels.
This monster should be together and running in about 6 weeks. Every custom part is blueprinted and the entire conversion should be available as a kit later this year (assuming it works as planned). In addition, many safety modifications are in the works, such as a bladder-type fuel cell, full roll cage, racing seats with 5 point harnesses and suspension modifications.
Cost: Budget is $15,000 including body mods, paint, interior and stereo (gotta have tunes with one!).
I am putting together a website which will document with photos all aspects of the project.

Also included are a pair of 911 electric mirrors which I may weld on to the X. I'll have to see how they look.
As far as the rods, we are using stock rods that have been nitrite treated. According to the performance guy, this should make them nearly bulletproof.

If that motor was paired with a Electromotive tech 1 distributorless ignition, it could put out up to 175 hp. I wanted more, however, so the turbo idea came up.
The brakes have been upgraded with braided steel lines, slotted rotors and greenstuff pads in the front. The car stops pretty fast now, but I will consider a bigger brake set-up in the future if needed.
The suspension will get custom coil-overs, Koni orange inserts (I just picked up a new set), custom front sway bar tied to the upper suspension and a rear Watson linkage to minimize body roll.

One thing I would definitely do is think about that tranny real soon. The first time you dump the clutch your are going to have a frizbee spinning where your clutch disk was. Going home soon. I have been working with an individual who specializes in modifing cars for extreme performance. We are building a 1500cc X engine for my '78 that should have more power than any X ever built. Here is a laundry list of things being built or purchased for this project:

I'm sure there are other parts that I'm forgetting....
A 6 speed transmission is planned, but we figure we will break the Bertone 5 speed trans first.
Power goal: 400hp at the wheels.
This monster should be together and running in about 6 weeks. Every custom part is blueprinted and the entire conversion should be available as a kit later this year (assuming it works as planned). In addition, many safety modifications are in the works, such as a bladder-type fuel cell, full roll cage, racing seats with 5 point harnesses and suspension modifications.
Cost: Budget is $15,000 including body mods, paint, interior and stereo (gotta have tunes with one!).

Also included are a pair of 911 electric mirrors which I may weld on to the X. I'll have to see how they look.
As far as the rods, we are using stock rods that have been nitrite treated. According to the performance guy, this should make them nearly bulletproof.

If that motor was paired with a Electromotive tech 1 distributorless ignition, it could put out up to 175 hp. I wanted more, however, so the turbo idea came up.
The brakes have been upgraded with braided steel lines, slotted rotors and greenstuff pads in the front. The car stops pretty fast now, but I will consider a bigger brake set-up in the future if needed.
The suspension will get custom coil-overs, Koni orange inserts (I just picked up a new set), custom front sway bar tied to the upper suspension and a rear Watson linkage to minimize body roll.

Souds like you are going whole hog. would be cheaper if you did it yourself, so anyone wanting to do this just remember it includes labour. One thing I would definitely do is think about that tranny real soon. The first time you dump the clutch your are going to have a frizbee spinning where your clutch disk was. Going home soon. Denis has just been an excellent host even though he does not think so. I just wanted to let your all know that he has gone way out for me and my quest for an X and in putting me up at his place. So thaks Denis I really appreiciate all you have done for me. I am still at his place and wanted to get this on the web before I left.
