are these not recommended?

my 78 had it's outer boots butchered by a towing incident, and i need to replace them.

i'd rather not disturb the CV / axel shaft / rear
suspension if i don't have to.

i guess i'm looking for an easy way out.
the tow company has agreed to make-good,
but only if they do the repair.

on principle, if it's going to take more than
a few hours, i'm going to hand-over my car
to these guys.
but this involves yet another tow.... ;(

The idea is a good one, the need is there, there just isn't a way to make it work. You might get them to work if you removed the axles but then you might as well use the real things. I suppose one could say that is why they aren't used at the factory.

You shouldn't have to give them the car to fix. They are liable for the COST of the repair, not the repair. Tell them they can cut you a check (get three high estimates) or you will file suit in small claims, complain to the BBB, etc. Or if you have coverage for this give it over to your insurance agent and let them hassle it out. Tell them you don't have inept tow companies do repairs to your rare Italian cars, as a general rule. Nothing personal, right?

BTW, the "tow hooks" you are referring to aren't really for towing, they are cargo hold-downs for shipping the car. They are useable for trying the car down after it's on the flatbed, not for getting it onto the flatbed. Sorry you had a moron for a tow truck driver.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I have found that the best way to do it is to use a long tow strap (you know, a giant yellow seat belt with a useless dinky metal hook at each end). You take either end of the strap, loop it around each shock on the bumper, tie it into a knot (in other words, don't use the hook) once around each shock, then grab the strap in the middle & tow away!! Quite simple once you get the hang of it, also if you run your car bumperless, it is wise to always have at least 1 bumper shock & bolt onboard in case you need a good attachment point for an emergency tow or ditch extrication

Naturally, that only works if your X used the bumper shocks - For the oldies & the euros, I believe the tie-down-points mentioned previously are really about the only fair choice, as on those cars they are part of the bumper bracket and are thus (relatively) stronger than the ones on, say, my '80, which are actually rather dainty looking extensions of the car's bodywork.

Then there are the Xs like my '75, which does not have any tie-down-eyes on it anywhere, not on the bumpers or the body! UGH - just get some people together & push it onto the truck!

My '81 X was dragged about 15 feet out of a fairly steep ditch by a tow-truck winch using the rear end tie-down loops - worked great (don't ask... thank the Fiat Gods, the only damage was a couple of pinholes in the radiator where the spoiler mounting screws were pushed back into it).
