And my X isn't running due to problems with the law here. I have to get throught the MOT but the guy says 2 things:

1) Rust at rear suspension near engine = BAD (though I do not agree with him, only 1 layer of the 3 steel sheets is rusted through

2) Steering is too vague i.e. play at the joints or knuckles or what's it called.

problem #1 can be solved but I don't know what to do with #2... What should I replace? Is it a DIY job (I'm quite handy)

Thanks for any advice or pointers..

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->You only have a few joints to play with so things shouldn't be too bad. The biggest problem is accessibility since most of the threaded parts of the steering are neatly hidden behind the bodywork.

Just replace the track-rod ends to start with since these are the ones that see most abuse and the most common cause of trouble. While you have the ball joints removed from the hubs try shifting the steering from side to side while the steering wheel is held still. If you get any significant movement you may want to check the steering rack mounting bushes and the steering rack itself.

The front track control arm is generally longer lived than the steering rod ends, but it too needs checking, both the ball joint at the hub end and the rubber bushes at the chassis end. There is also the rubber bushes on the front radius arms, due to the highly exposed nature of these, it is quite possible that the rubber has perished allowing the radius arm to move forward and backward under pressure from the track control arm when turning. The problems you have here are that the track control arm, and the bushes for the both arms are harder to obtain than the steering rod ends. There was a real shortage of them last year, but I believe that a supply was uncovered within Europe....

When you dismantle the radius arm it is vital that you count the number and position of the shims as they come off. You'll need to put them back in the same configuration - so be VERY careful!

There is of course the hub bearings, but I'm sure you would have noticed any problems there already!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
