My 87 X is almost completly reassembled. It arrived with a cardboard box containing a slew of tranny parts! Anyway, the tranny is in, new clutch, PBS flywheel, just waiting for a clutch master from vicks. The X had sat for ~ 4 years... I was delighted when I was able to get the starter to spin on the first shot (special thanks to the $10 junkyard battery!)
It took a heck of a while to fire up, and if anyone is wondering you can run an X for about 3 minutes on a can of carburettor cleaner !
But as the story goes, there was a lot of stalling and a lot of sputtering and a whole lot of cranking. And even more cranking. Then a fuel line burst, and a small fire, and more cranking...
So by the time the whole scenario was debugged and drinking from the fuel tank, I shut it down for a bit to top up the coolant.
Go to restart it and a disheartening "click". The solenoid strikes solidly, the fuel pump whirs. "Click". The stinkin' car is now mocking me! It proceeds to do nothing more than click for the next 20 minutes. I get a little peeved. Put it in gear and push to try a different spot on the flywheel. Can't push start it, since there is no clutch master cylinder...
And I'm just getting more and more agrivated. SO I did the only logical thing. Left it alone and had a beer. The next day, slip the key into the ignition, fires right up. Shut it down, start it up, shut it down, start it up. Always starting right up.
SO I'm concluding that in my crazy first-time-in-4-years start attempt, I must have just got the starter too darned hot. My buest guess, I could be wrong. Glad I didn't start swapping starters (got 4 on the shelf from fun I had with the 86X- that was fixed with 1/0 welding cables from the battery to the starter!)

I had the same problem with an old Chevy of mine. It got hot, wouldn't start, let it cool, started right up. The problem is, after a month of doing this, it eventually fried itself, and cracked the solenoid. I would reccomend fixing it ASAP (replace and add heat sheild??), or you'll be wishing you had when you're stranded in the grocery store parking lot...

Remove with a 13mm end wrench... sand the cable and the trans and body pad... re bolt tightly.
I spent 3 weeks on this forum chasing that one down... do this first... before you go else where.
BTW, solenoids are easily unsoldered, parts cleaned or turned over, and reassembled! Good for anothe 110K!

I got about 25' of 1/0 welding cable, and ran one piece from the + side of the battery to the hot side of the solenoid, and another from the - side of the battery to a starter bolt. Zip tied it up along the coolant pipe tunnel.
It was actually a very big improvement in the electrical performance of the car.
Also I am positive that the X would benefit from a larger cable from the alternator to the hot side of the starter. That little #10 wire is just not up to the task.

Now you must GROUND the block to the CHASSIS... and that is done with a braided strap from a trans bolt to another GROUND PLATE similar to the one up front for the battery.
(I read somewhere where without this strap, the only ground path left is the ignition cable. It went on to say that if you have replaced your ignition cable several times that most likely it has deteriorated due to electrolisis and you must have a loose GROUND STRAP someplace!~)

Then I purchased a new solonoid and installed it. It is still doing the same thing now hot or cold. The only thing I haven't tried is what my friend here at home suggested. Take a Ford starter relay and wire it in so that where the red wire to the starter went gets full 12v power. He has alot of experience with VW's and Fiat's and he told me that this same thing happens on Beetles all the time.
So after my move I am going to try this. Puzzeling thing is that up to now the X1/9 hasen't given me a problem for close to 3 years.????

If it still just clicks, pull the starter, bench test, and then you will MOST probably need to rebuild or replace the solenoid.

If Damon has a good ground and a brand new solenoid... then how well does it bench test?
If it just clicks on the bench... then the starter needs work... If it works well on the bench... then there is either a power SOURCE or GROUND problem that needs addressing.

I would guess its the ignition switch... prove it by using a hot wire to the ignition wire lug on the solenoid.
Also measure the voltage thru the switch with a DIGITAL VOM and compare it to the hot wire voltage.
In my case... I read 12.56 vdc at the battery and 12.05 vdc at the ignition lead to the solenoid. This 1/2 vdc loss would be almost indistiguishable on an ANALOG VOM, not see AT ALL with a test light... but told me I had a difference in GROUND potential on the engine block when using the DIGITAL VOM.
Fixed in 30 seconds... after chasing it for 3 weeks!
If the hot wire doesn't do it and your grounds are good and it bench tests OK again... I'm tapped!

My 1980 X1/9 was taken off the road by the previous owner because the starter failed. Well, of course I wanted to get my 1980 X on the road (now I have a 1986, so the 1986 is more of a project car). I took out the starter motor (it took 3 days because it was 15 degrees in my garage in the middle of winter). Once it was out, I disassembled it and found, get this, PLASIC! When the solonoid turns on, it pushes a lever against plastic ring to place the gear in the right place to get it to connect to the engine. The solonoid will continue to press on this level even while it is spinning to start the motor. I guess the old owner way over cranked the engine, and the plasic melted! Without the use of the solonoid, gears will not always mesh right. This plastic right must be replaced. Right now my starter motor is at Prat and Whitney having that part made for it (for free no less! I have a friend who has a friend who works there. Maybe I'll order a couple dozen of these items, and give them out to the needy).
In the mean time, I found a way to get the car started some times. Pop the car into a high gear (3rd, 4th, 5th). Push the car forward just a little bit with it in gear. Now hop in the car and start it. If it doesn't work, try again. What this does (I think) is rotates the engines gear that connects to the starter motor, if it rotates to the right spot, then it will mesh and it will start.
Of course, everything I said could be wrong. That's just what I found to be the case with my 1980 X1/9.
I had a thought, what if Fiat re-introduced the X1/9 (not under that name, but the same concept). It would be a very great car. It would be able to have a 150HP engine and get 60MPG. I think it would make a wonderful alternitive to Ferraris.

My 87 X is almost completly reassembled. It arrived with a cardboard box containing a slew of tranny parts! Anyway, the tranny is in, new clutch, PBS flywheel, just waiting for a clutch master from vicks. The X had sat for ~ 4 years... I was delighted when I was able to get the starter to spin on the first shot (special thanks to the $10 junkyard battery!)
It took a heck of a while to fire up, and if anyone is wondering you can run an X for about 3 minutes on a can of carburettor cleaner !
But as the story goes, there was a lot of stalling and a lot of sputtering and a whole lot of cranking. And even more cranking. Then a fuel line burst, and a small fire, and more cranking...
So by the time the whole scenario was debugged and drinking from the fuel tank, I shut it down for a bit to top up the coolant.
Go to restart it and a disheartening "click". The solenoid strikes solidly, the fuel pump whirs. "Click". The stinkin' car is now mocking me! It proceeds to do nothing more than click for the next 20 minutes. I get a little peeved. Put it in gear and push to try a different spot on the flywheel. Can't push start it, since there is no clutch master cylinder...
And I'm just getting more and more agrivated. SO I did the only logical thing. Left it alone and had a beer. The next day, slip the key into the ignition, fires right up. Shut it down, start it up, shut it down, start it up. Always starting right up.
SO I'm concluding that in my crazy first-time-in-4-years start attempt, I must have just got the starter too darned hot. My buest guess, I could be wrong. Glad I didn't start swapping starters (got 4 on the shelf from fun I had with the 86X- that was fixed with 1/0 welding cables from the battery to the starter!)

I had the same problem with an old Chevy of mine. It got hot, wouldn't start, let it cool, started right up. The problem is, after a month of doing this, it eventually fried itself, and cracked the solenoid. I would reccomend fixing it ASAP (replace and add heat sheild??), or you'll be wishing you had when you're stranded in the grocery store parking lot...

Remove with a 13mm end wrench... sand the cable and the trans and body pad... re bolt tightly.
I spent 3 weeks on this forum chasing that one down... do this first... before you go else where.
BTW, solenoids are easily unsoldered, parts cleaned or turned over, and reassembled! Good for anothe 110K!

I got about 25' of 1/0 welding cable, and ran one piece from the + side of the battery to the hot side of the solenoid, and another from the - side of the battery to a starter bolt. Zip tied it up along the coolant pipe tunnel.
It was actually a very big improvement in the electrical performance of the car.
Also I am positive that the X would benefit from a larger cable from the alternator to the hot side of the starter. That little #10 wire is just not up to the task.

Now you must GROUND the block to the CHASSIS... and that is done with a braided strap from a trans bolt to another GROUND PLATE similar to the one up front for the battery.
(I read somewhere where without this strap, the only ground path left is the ignition cable. It went on to say that if you have replaced your ignition cable several times that most likely it has deteriorated due to electrolisis and you must have a loose GROUND STRAP someplace!~)

Then I purchased a new solonoid and installed it. It is still doing the same thing now hot or cold. The only thing I haven't tried is what my friend here at home suggested. Take a Ford starter relay and wire it in so that where the red wire to the starter went gets full 12v power. He has alot of experience with VW's and Fiat's and he told me that this same thing happens on Beetles all the time.
So after my move I am going to try this. Puzzeling thing is that up to now the X1/9 hasen't given me a problem for close to 3 years.????

If it still just clicks, pull the starter, bench test, and then you will MOST probably need to rebuild or replace the solenoid.

If Damon has a good ground and a brand new solenoid... then how well does it bench test?
If it just clicks on the bench... then the starter needs work... If it works well on the bench... then there is either a power SOURCE or GROUND problem that needs addressing.

I would guess its the ignition switch... prove it by using a hot wire to the ignition wire lug on the solenoid.
Also measure the voltage thru the switch with a DIGITAL VOM and compare it to the hot wire voltage.
In my case... I read 12.56 vdc at the battery and 12.05 vdc at the ignition lead to the solenoid. This 1/2 vdc loss would be almost indistiguishable on an ANALOG VOM, not see AT ALL with a test light... but told me I had a difference in GROUND potential on the engine block when using the DIGITAL VOM.
Fixed in 30 seconds... after chasing it for 3 weeks!
If the hot wire doesn't do it and your grounds are good and it bench tests OK again... I'm tapped!

My 1980 X1/9 was taken off the road by the previous owner because the starter failed. Well, of course I wanted to get my 1980 X on the road (now I have a 1986, so the 1986 is more of a project car). I took out the starter motor (it took 3 days because it was 15 degrees in my garage in the middle of winter). Once it was out, I disassembled it and found, get this, PLASIC! When the solonoid turns on, it pushes a lever against plastic ring to place the gear in the right place to get it to connect to the engine. The solonoid will continue to press on this level even while it is spinning to start the motor. I guess the old owner way over cranked the engine, and the plasic melted! Without the use of the solonoid, gears will not always mesh right. This plastic right must be replaced. Right now my starter motor is at Prat and Whitney having that part made for it (for free no less! I have a friend who has a friend who works there. In the mean time, I found a way to get the car started some times. Pop the car into a high gear (3rd, 4th, 5th). Push the car forward just a little bit with it in gear. Now hop in the car and start it. If it doesn't work, try again. What this does (I think) is rotates the engines gear that connects to the starter motor, if it rotates to the right spot, then it will mesh and it will start.
Of course, everything I said could be wrong. That's just what I found to be the case with my 1980 X1/9.
I had a thought, what if Fiat re-introduced the X1/9 (not under that name, but the same concept). It would be a very great car. It would be able to have a 150HP engine and get 60MPG. I think it would make a wonderful alternitive to Ferraris.
