I'm going crazy w/this starter problem! I bought my '82 over a week ago and have yet to drive it. When I got the car the starter (a Marrelli, original I assume) would not do anything when key was turned. Got a rebuilt Marrelli from Autozone and installed. It spun great, but made a horrible crunching sound like it wasn't engaging the flywheel all the way. The old starter which I still have has a very slightly larger gear (maybe 1mm difference, should be immaterial), and you can tell 3/4 of that gear at one time engaged with the flywheel. The cases are the same except for the locating dowel in the middle bolthole (new one doesn't have one). Could this make the difference?. I've mounted the new starter every way I think of (there is a little play within the bolt holes) and it still makes that horrible sound. Is there a sight window I don't know about? Hopefully someone here can help, as the local asylum has been sending me brochures.

If this was done right, I'm afraid you problem may be with the flywheel.
But you did everything right. If the starter wasn't spinning at first, you were needing a starter anyway (unless bad connections). Now you got the starter running but strange noises. If for any reason you remove the starter again, try to make it worth by plugging it direct to the battery. If it is spinning smoothly, then you will know the problem is at the flywheel.
Changing the flywheel is not a big deal, except it required the removal of the tranny...<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
